What an awesome project this car is
For those that don't know, it's the next British Land Speed Record attempt, where the car is attempting to reach 1000 mph average over a measured mile. It uses a hybrid rocket and an EJ200 jet engine (from the Eurofighter Typhoon), meaning it has 133,000 bhp
A new contract for it was annouced today - the fuel pump to move over 900 litres of oxidant for the rocket needs to be extremely powerful. All 900 litres need to be moved into the rocket at a pressure of 1300 PSI, and all needs to be moved within 25 seconds. So the fuel pump being used?
A 2010 Cosworth F1 engine link to story and pics on website
Also just read the latest installment of Andy Green's diary on the BBC site, and I read something mightily impressive.
As far as I can find out, the world record for a production car for the 0-100-0 mph sprint is the Ultima GTR at 9.4 seconds (link).
Bloodhound SSC is planning to do 0-1,000-0 mph in 100 seconds In that time, it will have covered 10 miles in total, and it'll cover the measured mile in 3.6 seconds - totally mental!
If you're interested, take a look at the car at http://www.bloodhoundssc.com - it's just an amazing feat of engineering!

The fuel pump being used is driven by the F1 engine, I thought you meant the engine is the fuel pump and I got confused.

what do you think a pump is? Its essentially a motor.

You're right mate, I need to brush up on my pumps. It's not as if I'm a pump engineer to trade...
All they're doing is using a petrol engine in place of an electric motor.
edit, just read what you wrote again. Explain how a pump is essentially a motor?

mmm good choice on the f1 engine driving the pump actually, there will be no other engine with that power and lightness.

the main part of the pump is a motor... unless your talking about a foot pump, hand pump etc

What? A motor's not the main part, it's not even a part of it. It's the part that drives it.

So... the part that drives it, that spins up to 18000rpm, the makes the pump mechanisim work isnt a main part
Without it..... it wouldnt be a pump!

Right mate fine, whatever you want to think. You can have a complete pump without a motor. It's like saying that without an engine a car isn't a car, not really true is it.

so.... you can have a fuel pump without a motor of sorts.....
ok
hand/foot pump = motor is person
You ALWAYS need something to drive it!

As said mate, fine if that's what you want to think. A pump is a pump, whether it's got drive or not. What you said, and I quote, was 'what do you think a pump is? Its essentially a motor.' You've changed your tune a bit now though?
And yes, you could have a fuel pump without a motor. All you'd need to do is remove the motor. Point being?

pump
What a shit word to be arguing over! lol
I'm more amazed at how small and compact F1 engines are these days, plus a clutch the size of your fist! Now that's amazing!

TBH I always think of pumps in 2 parts, the drive and the pump, the pump has nothing to do with the drive.

i see what your saying...
An oil pump is a pump.... and it doesnt have its own power source BUT to me its just a load of metal gears when its not connected.
I.e it needs to be rotating (in this case) to 'pump'... to me thats a very major factor of a pump (system)

pumps don't have gears in them. And they don't need to be turning to 'be a pump'.
You stick to racing cars and I'll stick to pumps mate.

I'm referring to an oil pump in the above comment. Youre telling me that a conventional oil pump does not need to rotate, or have 'gears' (gears may be a vague description). OK....
Hey... YOU ARE THE EXPERT as you keep saying.
If you say the opposite to what I have said above you clearly know fuck all and I really dont understand why you are being so hostile.
Read between the lines.... I said I understood where you were coming from, BUT I stated that I (myself) wouldnt call something that doesnt have an energy source (that needs one to pump) a working pump.
A water pump on a car wont pump without power
An oil pump on a car wont pump without power
A foot pump wont inflate a tyre without a foot/leg
but yes... the parts responsible for moveing the fluid are the pump... but are useless without a means to pump
Mate!

1. I've not once said I'm an expert. All I was saying was I worked with pumps every working day for 4 years.
2. I did not once say the opposite to what you said and I'm not being hostile, just getting annoyed. I was being totally serious when I said about you sticking to racing cars, it's bound to be a hell of a lot more interesting.
A water pump on a car, regardless of whether it's got 'power' going to it, is still a pump
An oil pump without 'power' is still a pump
And a foot pump is still a pump without a foot/ leg 'powering' it.
When you go to buy a new oil pump for the motor what do you call it? Because sitting on the shelf in a shop it's not being powered.
The parts responsible for moving the fluid are everything, from the internal stuff to the casing.
You don't even need to be an expert to know this stuff.

Agree with AK TBH.
A pump is the whole package in my books, drive + movement mechanism
