Not really, a good handling nippy car. They always manage to put a smile on your face, although I much prefer my s1 16v over a GTI.

The 106 will handle better as thats been very well discussed but the corsa will be quicker FACT. Not by much mind but the torque of the XE will always be the winning factor.

Quite fancy one, bored of the XE.

My mates had a couple they've always been entertaining from the passenger seat.

Do they take well to exhaust and intake mods?

Yes, manifold de-cat and forced induction will make a huge difference. Get a set of catcam 708's and a remap and you'll see really good gains.

Not a backwards step. My old XSi 16v would easily be level til silly speeds where the torque of the XE would see it away, but in every other way the 106 was a better performing car. It wasn't even unreliable.

I liked my 8v but it's a completely different car with the 16v in, problem wise mine suffers from laquer peel, common problem for 106's around this age. The only thing to ever go wrong with it was a collapsed inner bearing on drivers driveshaft, didn't cost me fuck all for a new one though, rear axle is starting to creek a bit now so I'm on the hunt for a GTI axle. Might aswell upgrade to discs, although drums are more than enough.

No not a backwards step, great car IMO. I had a yellow one few years back with a manifold forced induction kit exhaust etc and it always used to put a smile of my face. After I sold my silver xe I got myself a vts, baring in mind my silver xe was 2.1 had cams sbd manifold and full rebuild it never made the vts look slow. I'd say do it mate, just go over it with a fine toothcombe. Noisy gearbox usual stuff..

Aye am trying to sell it to him but think he needs to sell his car 1st.Would have took his car and some cash for it but the GF dont like them Clio's.

No amount of extra BHP would make me like it though.Interiors are shit, can hear every road noise.Handles awesome as standard mind you,bit as a whole i just dont like it.

Oh and take a jack with you to check the rear axle bearings.
It really isnt a nice job changing it over in this weather.

You won't need a jack to check the rear beam just put your foot on top of the wheel and push it hard a few times. If it moves at all then it's goosed.

Mine and the wifes old gtis had the usual exhaust, manifold, decat and induction kit as did the vts we owned but my corsa was always quicker. Not by a massive amount but still noticeable.

What if its slammed on its cunt.

My beam was past fuked but i still needed to jack it up to check. They have a small bit of play anyway and pushing in on the top of the tyre you will just feel the rubber flexing so not really a good way of checking.

It's more than enough to check. Well for me it was anyways and having owned 3 of them I was used to looking out for the signs. The whole alloy will move not just the tyre.

Hard to explain. I always thought my old xe would leave it for dead, but it would only maybe pull a car or two cars length on me over 1/4 roughly.

Certainly going to consider one i think.

My mate and i ended up on the conversation of being fed up of our cars in the pub last night and may be doing a little swapsy

Sadly not a 106gti that will be coming my way, but 170bhp of Italian boost
