Thinking of selling the polo gti after christmas and getting a clipper for the summer. I'd preferably want a gti but aslong as its good condition I wouldn't be to fussed. Any body got good or bad stories about these? What to look out for? Anybody got any pics of them please? Thanks guys

Had one down Dad's yard last year, scrapped it though as it was rotten. Still got the kit i think.

Fro, has your dads yard got many ford alloys that would fit an escort?

finding parts that aren't now obsolete is becoming very difficult (window rubbers are hens teeth)

mohair hoods are around £200-£300, most of the original ones have perished/torn over the years

if you get one with a pierburg carb, it's worth changing it for a 32/34 weber (£100-£200ish 2nd hand)

fuel filler pipe and tanks are prone to rotting, new tank is £100+ if i remember right

basically, get the best one you can afford and make sure it's complete - check it everywhere for rust, bent sills, knackered hoods and fuel tanks

the engines themselves are very simple and easy to work on, parts are readily available for all 8v vw engines

I loved my old gti cab. Awsome in summer!

Arches are the first to go as they are covered in the plastic ones.

Personally I'd go for good body and shit engine as the engines are soooo easy to work on.

Ta for the reply guys, can't wait to get one for summer just think it will be soo cool but I'll have a good look around and not rush into buying one, defo check the hood etc cause I don't want to be buying a new one of them! Guessing the insurance would be pretty high on these? So pref get a good bodywork clipper with a not so great engine? Lol Thanks

My mate had a 1.6/8 carbed one. Insurance wasn't that bad. But go for the gti if you can. Better interior etc.

I'd happily buy a non runner. Gti lumps can be picked up for sub £200!
