My desktop crapped itself ages so i was getting by with using my old hd in an external drive case, which has not also crapped itself.

I cant use my mums laptop for the things i normally do on a computer (Downloads, porn etc)

Wheres the best place for a decent desktop package and a good external HD for back-up.

Dont want a laptop i dont think, dislike using mums.

What should i expect to pay?

Im not too clued up on pc's nowadays but i would recon 500-700 for a decent spec,d package and if its just the usual downloading, internet use, etc and not hardcore gaming then thats how much for a decent one imo.
Pc world? Comet? Currys? And you could probably haggle them for a better deal as well.

If you want something apple check out cancomuk website

Edit.
Or you could also just buy everything apart from the monitor and connect it to your flat screen, assuming you have one. Its much better for when you have films and all that on the pc

Depends what you want out of it - If you want a full out gamers system then a grand or so will be a good starting point, if it's just for web/grot/basic gaming then you can pick up a system for £300 that will be ok.
Nath recently got a barebones (no hard drive, £60 gets you 1-2tb disk) for £250 ish from Novatech that was pretty decent - although it'd require a decent graphics card if you wanted to play games.

700 is a massive budget for a normal browsing PC now, Dom's price is more realistic.

Also agree with Jamie.

Ive never got on with Dell desktops, the ones Ive played with (read : fixed) terrible quality (this was 3 - 4 years ago now though) and slow and cumbersome. Their laptops seem good though.

I find its always best to build it from scratch for a desktop PC if youve got the knowledge / can be bothered, but if not like Dom says get a barebones

I dont want it for gaming, got the xbox for that.
And i dont have a flat screen telly yet, just starting to get back on my feet after a long skinto spell.

Dont want to spend the earth but i could always hang off for a month or so and save a bit more.

Send Nath a U2U about his system, it was an intel i3 and seemed pretty well specced (4GB ram etc). Was pre-built and all you had to add was a hard-drive which is £30 for a 500GB drive and install a OS (Windows is £80, obviously you can get it on the five finger discount).

Edit - Saying that, you could build something similar for the price he paid although it would mean sticking it together yourself.

Everything is pretty much colour coded and only fits in one place anyway so it isnt too bad for an absolute noob to pick it up, that and the mobo instructions are half decent these days as well

I was looking at those Acer ones last night, only thing that put me off was the lack of optical drive - easily sorted with a usb one though I suppose!

IMO the Revo is not suitable for general use. As soon as you start doing multiple things on it, opening lots of browsers etc it will start to struggle.

As a HTPC its awesome as all the work is offloaded onto the GPU but but for other stuff its not great.

£200 can build you a PC that is more than capable.

This!
Apart from very light browsing and playing video (as Rob said, you can offload it to the GPU), the Revo will struggle with anything else. You'd be better off with a proper desktop.
As said, have a look at Novatech as Nath got a decent deal.
