Was taking off an exhaust manifold to do a head gasket and the nuts came off easy apart from 3 which seemed to round easy as hell as they were so rusty, even with the hex socket not the 16 point thing or whatever is it.
this...

or would a nut splitter be easier, don't know how the work but are cheap.

They take locking wheel nuts off as if there not even there lol. really good but only to be used when the bolt is rounded or seized on.

Those Irwin bolt extractors are funkin ace. I used one on a siezed/rounded off caliper bolt on my old BMW and it came straight off. Highly recommend.

May have to purchase a set then, you just hammer it on and undo it with a ratched or something?

Just tap it on, as you turn to undo it cuts into the bolt head/nut.

Can use a ratchet, breaker bar or spanner.

Laurie, a nut splitter basically drives a spike into the side of the nut, total butchery but if you can fit it in and don't need to use the stud again then it can be a life saver.

Basically you can see by the picture, that spike in the wee hole goes against the flat of the nut then you stick a spanner/ ratchet on the hex and wind it in. I had to do it in work once with an M16 beast and a 24mm spanner to split it, was shiting it that it was going to ping out and remove my eye.

Base is 3/8in , 7/16in , 1/2in , 9/16in and 5/8in sizes, expansion is 5/16in , 10mm , 13mm , 11/16in and 3/4in.

Expansion has 5 more different sizes in it basically.

The exhaust manifold bolts are usually very tight and need burning off. You should have just removed the head with the manifold, it's only 2 bolts, it's a lot easier

The down pipe bolts are a shit load worse TBH
I thought about that but the downpipe nuts don't resemble nuts at all.

I've only ever used hydraulic torquing gear, some scary shit. Doing up M75 studs with 25,000psi is a bit unnerving. A couple of the apprentices were doing it one day and one of the high pressure hoses split - caught a boy in the chest and bruised him quite badly.
