Bit of a holiday nightmare,
Workmate of mine recently went on a family holiday, skiing in italy. 5 days in, he was involved in an incident whereby a german tourist knocked his relative off a ski lift causing injury to her face. I dont know the full extent of what happened, certainly words were exchanged in an argument. My friend and one of his family (brother i think) were then arrested and put in the local jail. The police certainly sided with the german man.
He was in jail for 6 days, then released. The lawyer assigned advised them that they had (as british drunken hooligans) beat this man up and put him in hospital. The allegations were completely false and they weren't told what was happening, food was bread only (unless they paid for anything else) and while in jail he had his trainers robbed by another inmate
Point is, anyone else had any sort of experience like this? I find this really hard to understand. Poor lad wants to put it all behind him but surely something can be reported to foreign office/embassy? Any thoughts? I thought shit like this doesn't happen.

Trust me if you met this guy would laugh at the thought of being assaulted by him.
Anyway, hypothetically even if he did the crime, is he not entitled to basic prisoner rights? Or is this country just criminally lenient?

So your friend and his brother started a fight with the German guy and got arrested?
Sounds fairly routine.
I think you're probably used to the UK being a soft touch.

Ive just spoken to the guy in the mess, so ive gathered a bit more information.
Little sister/relative knocked down by german guy at gondola. German guy gets earful off family/friends/locals etc. Apparently there was a physical confrontation i.e. pushing by his friends but not him. Some people detained by ski security people/local police. Friend asks 'where are you taking him?'. At which point feet swept from underneath him, face in snow, arm behind back and cuffed.
Now i found this really crazy, i thought it was the local police cell. Taken to 'nearest' jail 80km away, strip searched, hosed and de-loused put in with short term criminals i.e 5 years serving and less. Where my friend is threatened and has his lacoste trainers taken. 6 days without knowing what is happening, very scant information by assigned legal rep. Put it this way - no outside contact, my friend admitted he thought he would be there for weeks. They had nothing to wash with or a toothbrush for 6 days. All for a fat german guy knocking his relative over at the gondola.
And family guy was the first thing i thought when he first told me.

Just seems extreme to me, we're talking about a country in the EU.
Thats the thing, no charges or fines. Just detained for 6 days.

In a sense, detained for 6 days is equivalent to a fine... take it on the chin, learn from it, think himself lucky it wasn't worse and move on - harsh but that's life at times.

Well said! Maybe wrong that the police didn't slam the Germans in alongside the guy, but atleast they're not complete push overs like out police and justice system.

Probs worth talking to someone about it. Does sound dodgy as fuck. But anyone who's been to Italy will know, the police there are not to be messed with. Lol

This is why people with accents shouldn't do ski trips.
