We're in the process of changing my girlfriends car and are looking for something that is economical, reliable, small and cheap. We only have about £3500 and are getting rid of a seat leon tdi......wanting something as economical, or better if possible. The car is used for commuting only, but thats a 60 mile round trip......any ideas? Tested a smart fourtwo the other day, but realised it wasn't for motorways when the engine drowned out the radio at 70.

So far she's come up with a toyota aygo so any help is appreciated....

Clio DCI, they come in 3 variants, 65bhp, 80bhp and 100bhp, the 80bhp is the one to go for.

stick a remap on and your over 100bhp and still seeing 60mpg, plus they handle really well and are comfy on long trips

Why buy a 80 and then remap it?

Not sure if they will be over your budget, but a 1.3 Grande Punto Dynamic will give your 50mpg without trying too hard and they're quiet and comfortable. There's not much space in the back, but show me a recent car of that size that doesn't have the front seats touching the rears when in a normal position.

the 100s have been known to suffer from intercooler failures which can cost big money to put right, the 80 and the 65 arent intercooled and have proved to be more reliable when remapped
