I'm going to do a 280 mile charity bike ride in the summer & need some new wheels.
Would rather get something decent & can get one through the cycle to work scheme.
What would you bike people suggest? Hybrid or a mountain bike with some road tyres better?
Got my eye on a Kona Kula 2011 model. Think it works out at £43 a month for a year with the CTWS, which is less than half rrp.

Check out an Orange G4 S.
I got the slightly more basic G3 with some Maxxis Wormdrive tyres. Rolls pretty well on tarmac and spec'd well enough to cope with muddy stuff.
Kona's are pretty solid also.

I've got the 2009 version of this
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/allez-sport-27-2011-road-bike-ec025028
It's a good fast bike but not sure I'd want to do 280 miles on it, it's not the most comfortable thing going

Nearly went with an inappropriate joke
Any bike with good geometry and road tyres will be ideal for the ride.
Go with a bike you'll use after and buy some simple components to make the 280 mile better.

I see your 280 miles and I raise you my 900 miles!
If its all on road, road bike all day long brother. My mate works in a bike shop down here and gave me a Giant TCR frame and built me a pretty nice bike. Got some carbon bits on it and its fast
To be fair I know nothing about bikes, whats good etc. He just tells me what I need, I buy it then ride it

Does shell do the cycle to work scheme? Iv just bought a boardman comp mountain bike from halfords, 20% off. looks like you would be better with a road bike for the 280 miles but what will you get more use out of afterwards?

Just not sure what bike to get.

70 miles a day is not gonna be easy mate. Your gonna need every advantage you can get so I'd say road bike all the way.

I done my first coast to coast on a Mountain Bike last year and really wouldn't recommend it, hence the looking at hybrids for this year. I would have maybe considered a road bike but I rode a mates hybrid for about 50 miles last year and absolutely loved it, kind of best of both world from my point of view.
Good luck with the training, I hadn't been on a bike in a long time, didn't put nearly enough effort into it and was pretty much on my death bed by the end of it, not that I'm trying to put you off

Some kind of hybrid would be best. An out'n'out rode bike will do your back in if you're not used to it.
Go to a quality bike shop for some proper advice. Not Halfords.

I agree with Deano for getting some proper advice. Somewhere like Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative would be a good start.

This is the new version of the hybrid bike I have. Great bike, perfect for me where most of my riding is road to work and back but can also handle towpaths fine at the weekend

Ditto, if you are going to do some serious road riding get a Hybrid or a road-bike, it will make your life so much easier! If you arent going to actually use it for riding to work and just for knobing about on weekends get your Kona
