depends how many miles you do.
diesel cars are generally more expensive to buy then petrols and diesel has been priced higher than petrol for years now.
people who do low mileage won't see much difference. people who do 15k+ a year will.

i do about 200 miles a week in a tdi bora and costs me 25 but when i had my scenic it was costing 55 a week,

to answer the ops question, a diesel will be cheaper to run. maintain and buy on the other hand is a different story thanks to things like dpfs.

You'll pay more for a diesel up front, but likely get most of that back if you sell it within a few years. Its not the sky high prices you need to be worrying about, its the difference between the two fuel costs. If diesel was 20p per litre more expensive, you'd never save anything. I think at the moment they're about 4/5p apart, in which case you probably will.

say the average diesel will get 60 to the gallon. therefore 400 miles is about 6.5 gallons and 44 quid at 135
and say the alternative petrol gets 40 to the gallon, which is 10 gallons for 400 miles at 1.29 is nearer 65 quid.
diesel is always cheaper to RUN

Even petrol hybrids are rarely as economical as a small common rail diesel.

diesel cars are only cheaper to run if you do over about 12500mile a year other wise you can do just as well with a 1.6 etc. It purely depends on the driving you do.

theres a site somewhere i've used, you put in milage & mpg etc, and works out what it will cost you to do a years milage (whatever you set it to), obv there will be different maint costs, but even doing 9k a year in the fiesta, i will save 600 a year on fuel going to a 2.0 hdi 307.
Which is what im doing.

i never found my fabia vrs amazing, sure it was a bit better then a petrol but its not that great in real world driving

I have a pug 206 1.4 hdi and a astra g 1.6 16v. If I drive the astra starting with a full tank on Monday, I need to refill come Friday (my journey is about 32 miles one way). If I take the pug and don't rag it, I get just shy of 800 miles to the tank which will do me 2 weeks! I've saved a fair few quid taking the pug rather than the astra! I've also been doing the same journey in a corsa d 1.4 16v auto. I struggle to get 350 miles out that tank even driving the most economically I could possibly drive!
I say lots of miles have a diesel, not many miles have a petrol!

I do exactly 225 miles a week to my work and back and in my Fiesta it'll cost me a maximum of £30 per week depending on my driving style, if taken easy I will do it using £20 worth of diesel.
I used the R32 one week as I fancied a change and driving like a granny I still went through £60 of petrol lol.

Diesel is great but the maintance cost of VAG has hit me hard 
If your trying to save money get a pug derv, they seem to run on air!
My VRS has cost a fortune with 'common problems', even a window regulator was 80 odd quid.
I travel 18 miles to work and back, so i am now looking into an astra gsi becuase apart from the poor MPG they are cheaper than a vag car in every way (servicing, parts)
Which appeals to me much more

My diesel is excellent on fuel consumption! First diesel ive had and i reckon it is alot cheaper. Although it wont stay like that for long the way it is going up.
Havent worked out exactly what mpg it does or anythin but its definately good

And also a VRS petrol vs a VRS diesel, the VRS diesel will still do an extra 10/14 over the petrol. The gf's dads Octy VRS Diesel does 44mpg average driving (and he drives quite hard). I know for certain he wouldn't manage to get the Petrol to do 44 average.
A diesel will always be cheaper to run. However you can't go saying a 3 litre diesel will cost more to run than a 1.2 litre petrol.
