tyres are a big factor?

could have the best suspension set up but if your rollin on £20 ditch finders you'll not get very far

You can't just throw coilovers on it and expect miracles.

What condition are the bushes/top mounts/balljoints/steering components in?

Tyres? Like Mike has said tyres are the most important thing about the cars handling, get some GOOD tyres on.

remove front arb? doe this make the front end less stiff resulting in less understeer? still got mine on my valver but never had it out yet to see what steering issues the valver may have!

i dont have one on mine jock. does seem to handle well although you need an uprated rear arb for the full benefit.

A rear ARB will make the world of difference.

the arse end was everywhere because you were throwing the car in too fast and lifting off/braking mid corner.

Throttle modulation is key, and dont lift off/brake mid corner

Normally the case... but it'll just brake away even at slow speeds if the setup is mince.

My old corsa suspension was gone by the time I sold it. It used to just step out at speed on constant radius corners... mid corner... with no change in speed (i.e no lifting, braking or introduction of power.)

yup...

If the rear steps out in a FWD just floor it and steer where you want to go

Used to drive the 205 trackcar in some interesting manners on certain corners.... either by braking into the corner or lifting violently and turning to get the rear lose and car pointing towards the exit

What about corners that start loose then end up going tight? As you'll have NO choice but to brake mid-corner surely?

Braking mid corner is not a complete no no. As said smoothness would be the key in a bend that tightens. Flying in then harking on the brakes is only going to find the back end jerking out.
