Not long ago, my mate bought a BMW E46 323i, its got 63,000miles on the clock, he has done a couple of thousands miles and now its going into limp mode.

i only have what he has said to repeat and he is very shite, and sketchy with cars, he won't accept anyones advice. he is 30yrs old in a few weeks and got his mum to take the car to local garage also not long after getting the car he went to top engine oil up, and accidently poured the oil into the ATF fluid. Then when he got some new ATF fluid he reckoned the car was empty of ATF fluid, he never flushed the engine oil out of there either.

its an auto gearbox, and seems stuck in gear he says, he has no kickdown, and the handbrake light and tcs control or abs lights stay on, and the ! cog symbol is lit up

my bet is its doomed and he won't get it fixed.

I have no advice to offer such an imbecile.

It's like blokes that don't drive, don't trust them.

Do you know people like this Ollie?

without a clue?

he couldn't even figure out a leaking tyre, i read all his manual, reset the pressure gauge warning on his dash, then it came back again.

i told him to check the tyre pressure to see if its gone down and thats whats causing the light to come on. But he couldn't be bothered with that.

i've been in the car a few times and noticed when driving around the oil light on the dash is on, he didn't really care and just tells me its probably a loose connection.

OMGz
You can't just top up the ATF fluid, you have to jack up the car and fill it from underneath wwith a pump or sqeezy bottle, he just filled up the power steering fluid with engine oil TBH

P.s the cog thing is a fail safe/limp mode, thats why its not working properly, could be a sensor or fluid actually might be low.

Surely if it's an Automatic it takes ATF in the gearbox? So maybe he's filled up the gearbox oil with engine oil?

You can get universal ones but specific ones are better.

you ogt an OBD2? if so VAG-COM and cheap cable will be enough for your rado.

Thats what he is saying lolz
But you can't accidentially do that, so I guess he poured it into the powersteering tank.

he never told me how much he put in, just said a few capfuls, but who puts engine oil in with the cap? he would lie to make it sound as least bad as possible.

then once he got the proper ATF fluid he poured that in, but said the level wasn't even touching the dip stick on the ATF cap.

i told him to keep an eye on the level as it doesn't just disappear in a system like that as its hydraulic fluid not lubricating. He never checked it again as far as i know.

@fro, corrado is OBD1

Thats nothing.. I know someone that filled their engine to the top with WATER! And another guy who thought the best way to fix a leak in his gearbox was to boil the kettle, add some rad seal and tip it IN the gearbox.

No
BMW use ATF fluid in the powersteering resovoir, it will say"atf only" on the cap.
You have to fill up the gearbox from under the car.
