Has it been done? Was thinking about it this morning. And in my eyes it'll be pretty simple, all you'd have to do is 'chop' the middle of beam out. And tidying it up obviously
So yeah, really quite a simple job, unless I'm missing something...
What would be the advantages of said conversion? I was thinking some form(s) of understeer would be reduced... Lift off, turn in etc. Less un-sprung weight which is an advantage straight away..
Thought it would make a good discussion

You'd probably need to cut the boot floor out and weld something stronger in for the rear 'wishbones' to bolt onto at least

Beardys rear engine space framed corsa has this. Bt obviously his was all cut up anyway due to the space frame. Aslong as you can weld and good with measurements i cant see it being too hard

Ah good point. Cuz if it was chopped there'd only be one place where'd it bolt to the chassis wouldn't there?

u can use a rear coil over on it and chop it in the middle but you would have to add a few linkages
i was thinking of modding a cavvy turbo rear beam to fit a corsa but its not worth it unless its a mega money track car imo

could be done prety cheaply TBH would just have to have good calculations on where to put the new mounts.

no, because how would you have any vertical movemnt of a seperate wheel with the beam pivoting in the middle as you have suggested, when the beam is still mounted horizontally in its orginal fixing , it would be locked with no movement what so ever

not if where you cut it you plan to pivot it from enabling vertical movement, and plan to keep the exsisting horrizontal fixing where the bush is, but then thats a trailing arm and not double wishbone which is what i consider as independant when beeing talked about in this situation

Depends what sort of rear suspension set up you would like,
Trailing arm?
Double wishbone?
Could make a crude trailing arm style from cutting the beam in half and adding two more pivots in the centre, but rather you than me,
Look at phillip2's rear engined corsa, that's got a proper trailing arm set up, it's not really that hard just a lot of it's custom.

I've design an independant rear suspension for a 205 gti, its not just a case of making the wheels independant its the whole design is shit because its pivoted in a back/front way not left/right in a front mcpherson strut, so completely fixing the camber, so when the car rolls a few degrees round a corner the back wheels lose the same amount of camber, usually making the back have positive camber sometimes. If you know about "roll centres" the standard rear beam is setup to have a lower roll centre than the front so actually designing in understeer.
The easiest way is to get the front suspension (struts,wishbones etc) off a corsa and make a subframe to hold it at the back and make turrets for the struts.
It will then handle like a beast maybe get 4 wheel drifting if front/back are the same.

the only way to do it thinking about it is to mount with 2 horrizontal fixings, keeping 1 of the orginals, what this does for geo at various points i cant tell you
