Been accepted as tenants on a 3 bed house, the gas is apparently a PAYG system.
So, does anyone here have this? Any pros / cons over the metering system?

PAYG I assume you mean a Prepayment meter (sometimes called Key) - they are normally a fair chunk more expensive than the same supplier's online only / direct debit tariffs, so get rid of it. Problem is you might have to put down a deposit to get meters installed

Yes a prepayment meter sorry, PAYG was the wording of the estate agents.
Right, guess they would be more expensive, any idea how much to pay for a metering system to be installed?

Right, after some digging it seems that prepay customers lose out on online discounts etc. A meter system install as Danny said incurs costs depending on supplier.
Guess its a case of switching suppliers for best tariff for now.

We are on one of them and we save more money than what we did on direct debit, We were £80 a month direct debit on a 2 bed house had the pay meter installed and now we are down to around £30/40 per month.
In the summer we will be around £15 a month

How is that even possible when it comes down to talking about the charging system as the only variable? Taking into account the cheapest PAYG tariff is on par with a supplier's standard tarriff, which is never as cheap as an online only, direct debit tariff?
Surely, to save a wedge like that, swapping to the PAYG charging system was not the only thing you changed, you must have cut your usage or replaced several aging appliances?
Aurora - I live in a new build 3 bed 3 storey (so excellent insulation, double glazed all round, efficient combi etc), my gas and leccy is through a normal meter and I'm on an online only, DD tariff, my monthly bill is £45 which builds up a nice credit balance for the winter. My water is also metered and that is £18 a month

Thought the same Danny. Unless going to PAYG makes you loads more conscious what you're using (so you use less) it doesnt sound right.
That or your original direct debit was set WAY too high!

We will see what it is like for the first few months, then look into changing the system back over. Hopefully the landlord will foot any deposit.

last time i moved into a house on prepay, suppliers said we had to be customers for 12 months before they would consider changing the meters,

I wouldn't move into a place that has PAYG utilities. It's an absolute fucking rip off!

much prefer the PAYG sysytem even if i do have to pay a little bit more , around £25 each on gas and electric per month and no big bills 
+ seeing exactly how much we use per day probably makes me abit more concious to turn the lights off etc

But you can see that if you take a meter reading every day? And if you are on Direct Debit there isnt any big bills, unless you're retarded and think you can pay £5 a month for gas and electricity and then are stumped when £400 bill lands on the doorstep

Update:
EOn confirmed that the property is both Prepay gas and electric which the landlord wasn't aware of apparently, hmm.
Anyway, partner has struck a deal with her provider to change them back to normal metering for £100. Landlord is offering to pay 50% so works out at £50 all in.
I didnt like the idea of using paypoint and after reading a few threads on MSE, im happy.
