The Mrs and I are heading up to the Lake District next Monday for 4 days and then stopping in York on the way home for a couple of nights.
Just wondering if you good northern people can point me in the right direction for good places to visit and see whilst we are there.
Thanks

It's great if you like anything outdoors, apart from that there isn't much.
You could get the boat from Bowness down to Lakeside then go to the Lakes Aquarium. Or get the car ferry across to the other side of the Lake and drive down to Lakeside.
Take a drive up the struggle at Ambleside to the Kirkstone Pass Inn for a beer outside looking down the valley if the weather is still nice. Go over Hardknott and Wrynose Pass.
Walk up to Coniston Old Man.
What kind of stuff do you want to do?

I can't tell if you are joking about the old man or not
Windermere, Derwent Water, Coniston and Ullswater all have boats you can either go for a guided trip on or hire rowing boats or even small motor powered boats.
Windermere and Ambleside will be absolutely heaving next week.
There's loads of walking you can do. Depends how big or how far you want to go! Loads of nice pubs to eat at. After that there isn't much in the way of tourist attractions. Not any decent ones anyway Mind you there is a Pencil museum at Keswick?
I can recommend a few nice pubs and places to walk that aren't that hard if you needed.
There is a maize maze near Kendal if that floats your boat.

Hmm it may not have been Kendal then. It was next to a small par 3 golf course in some sort of village type place.

Bowness I reckon. That's the only place I can think of that has mini golf and a small golf course next to it. My Grandpa used to run it

Seriously who is Coniston's old man?
Isn't there like nice old steam boats and stuff to ride on the lakes?
Pubs, speak to me about them. I like a good pub so long as they serve proper ale.
Pencil museum sounds riveting.
How busy is busy up there? Bearing in mind I work in London and thats proper busy.
Is Busy northen style more than 20 cars on the road at the same time.

The Old Man of Coniston is a mountain
Masons Arms, Strawberry Bank - Good to sit out on their sun terrace looking out over the valley
Kirkstone Pass Inn - Top of Kirkstone Pass, nice road to drive up, good views all the way up and from the top
The Albert, Bowness on Windermere
The Drunken Duck Inn, near Ambleside
Eagle & Child Inn, Staveley
Some good pubs in Hawkshead too.
That enough?
When I say busy I mean it'll be full of tourists not wanting to go anywhere in anything like a hurry and the roads and streets aren't able to cope with any more than 10 people at once so it doesn't take much to seem busy

The only place that has a steam boat is Ullswater and there is one large steamboat on Windermere but they run other boats too so it depends if you get lucky if you manage to get on that one. All the lakes have boats of some kind on them though.

Cool. Top man.
Is there any more decent roads I can take a diversion on to try and have a hoon down. (I will tell the mrs we're going somewhere).

The road up and over Kirkstone Pass and down to Patterdale/Glenridding/Ullswater is absolutely quality, worth the trip on it's own plus you go that way to get to the steamers as well.
Most of the roads are quite good but the main problem you'll have is everyone will be sat doing 30mph. Hardknott & Wrynose is a nice scenic drive.
This is going down Kirkstone towards Patterdale http://www.panoramio.com/photo/9004964 If you click to enlarge the photo on that link you can see the road winding down in to the bottom. Going up from Windermere is a bloody good drive too. That's probably about my favourite road around here.
Windermere to Patterdale road Go on streetview on this link and see what you think.
