What effects how a car depreciates? Can a manufacturer effect this in anyway with out restricting production?

desireability and reliability.

if a manufacturer and hit both these taregets, it will prob depreciate less.

Also, When a newer model comes out, The previous model becomes less desirable.

Vehicle lifecycle, micro/macro, desirability, reliability, taxation and legislation are a few factors to consider.

For example look at the current focus to the current golf, I had a look on Parkers prices, they say the focus loses around 9k after a year, the golf only 5k. Now surely these cars are very similar in availability, reliabilty, desireability, etc??

the golf has always depreciated less than the equivilent focus. people see it as a more ''premium'' brand even though if they took their rose tinted specs off they would see you can get a much higher spec focus for the same/less price of the golf.

If Focus people took their rose tinted specs off the equivalent Kia Cee'd is even better value

Have you seen the interior of a mk2 Focus compared to a mk5 golf? Specs is not all. I rather not lather myself in bright grey plastics, even in ST guise.
