Im sure this has already been thought of but you know how you can play tracks from your iPhone through your car radio with one of them cables.

Well as you can the radio on your iPhone, would it be posible to have an app that plays your music libary through your car radio without the need for the cable?

Not sure on the tech behind it or why the cables currently needed but maybe it could be done over 3G via a radio app that you tune in to the correct station in your car which then allows you to select tracks from the iPod libary to play....

I think you need to have a bit more of a grasp of radio spectrum and how 'radio' on your iPhone actually works

I know. The idea is that you don't have to buy a seperate accessory. Its all done via an App.

You'd need a radio station that transmitted on individual frequencies for every app owner.

So what your telling me is, it can't be done?

Would the user not be able to select the frequency via the app in the same way you select the frequency on the digital display incorporated within the plug in accessorys you can buy...

I just used iPhone as an example, it could be an app for any phone, it might be more suited to phones with built in radio tuners.

i think you can get an additional FM transmitter, set to the frequency of your choice

and then just tune in on your radio.

i know its not an "app" but its an add on.

You can already get a fm transmitter...you could plug that into your iPhone if you have the same fitment? I know what yous saying though, you wouldn't need a diff freq for each user as its only what is in range. Think they only reach about 4ft

Basically what i'm trying to achieve is an app that plays your tracks through your radio WITHOUT the need to purchase any additional plug in's etc.

ie. Instead of people paying £5 for the FM transmitter they pay 59p for the App. Also means you don't have to carry around a seperate plug in and can link it up to any radio in your car/house/mates house/

I know it can already be done on iPhones via Bluetooth but this requires your car/headunit to have bluetooth functionality.

In the long run you will probably be cheaper just buying the bluetooth headunit and do it that way.

Yeah but what people are telling you is that it's not an app problem (software) ... it's a hardware issue.

Physically if the iphone can't transmit radio signal without an FM transmitter, then how do you expect the app you're suggesting to be able to do it?

It's like wanting to change the software on your car's ECU to let you control the boost, when you don't have a turbo fitted.

Ok then, so its is possible on phones with built in FM Transmitters?

Is there an app currently avaliable to allow this?

you don't need an app.

You just plug the little FM transmitter in the top (£5) and then press play on your normal music... The FM transmitter is plugged into your headphone jack, and transmits at a frequency that music.

Then you have your radio tuned in to that frequency and it comes out your car speakers.

Think im getting confused between a transmitter and a reciever.

So long story short, it can't be done.

I know how they work, I use one most days.

Hence my idea on being able to do it without one.

So didn't it cross your mind that there was a reason you had to use it?
If you didn't need one to be able to do it, you wouldn't have to use one would you
