Had an Ibiza Cupra. Despised it. Always something wrong with it. Few of my friends had the 1.8T in various cars and everyone of them had a problem with it at some point. MAF sensors, coilpacks, not holding boost, limp mode etc

Never really had any problems with mine. Had to do the thermostat the other week which is the first thing in about 20k I have had to do.
Service it myself which costs under £100 for genuine parts. Not amazing on fuel but 32+ on the motorway for a 225 bhp 'quattro' hatch is pretty good imo.

I have got a mk3 Ibiza cupra 1.8t it's had a few coilpacks but that's it really mines standard I think if you mess with them that's where the problems start
I use about £40 in petrol and get around 150 miles

Its a bit if both really, turbos use more on short distance going to work and my girlfriends for a few weeks know I have got the works van so I'll be saving money in petrol
I think it's pretty quick standard altho a remap makes a massive difference which I might get 1 day
As for putting putting petrol in I think it's fine all it costs me is insurance and petrol so I'm happy with that

Cupra R here. Pretty reliable but has annoying common faults. Ignition coils needed upgrading, speed sensor went, egt sensor went, window regulator went, door slam panel seal perished and a brembo caliper seized. Engine has always worked though!

I know both sides, I know people who never have any problems, I know of others that seem to have constant problems. My old boss had a Golf Gti with the 150bhp lump, had it from new for 10 years, never had a MAF or coilpack fail.

I've had both the Ibiza cupra and Leon cupra R and the Ibiza was a bit of a pain for coil packs and lamda sensors but that was it. The LCR never put a foot wrong in the year I had it.

You say that but they were pretty easy and cheap to fix. The brembo one was expensive though, but I could of got it refurbed and saved money instead of replacing it.
Oh, and the window regulator was cheap but a bitch to change!
They are all common vag faults. Sensors just go sometimes!
I've had the car for 6 years now and it has never broken down. When you own a car for a few years you've got to expect some things to fail. Plus, it's a 225bhp 150mph+ car....
I loved my fiesta zetec-s, which I owned from new, and nothing went wrong. But if I still had it I'd be getting it treated for rust by now

had the 225 engine
IMO great engine. The car itself was riddled with Electrical faults (Audi TT) but the engine itself was fine. Early models pre 2002 suffer with coils

ive had a golf mk4 1.8t running 225ish bhp, an ibiza cupra mk3 1.8t running around 200bhp at a guess and a mk1 tt 1.8t 225 quattro
they are a good strong tunable engine, pretty good mpg...
had a few coilpacks go and a slight boost leak on the golf in a year and a half, cupra had nothing wrong, tt needed a new turbo when i got it

Agree with most comments. They're totally fine as long as you got your own copy of vagcom and cable to diagnose any faults, then once the computer tells you what's up it's just a matter of replacign whatever, which is mostly on the cheap side.

Octavia VRS with the 180bhp 1.8t. Had a starter motor fail, and a cat go, but both cost £110 to fix all in. Coils were replaced FOC by Skoda on a big recall last month. I get between 32-35 mpg on a mixed run, more on motorways. £70 in the tank normally gives 300+ miles. No real problems or issues, alothough mine is standard

MAF, Lambada, Coil Packs, Breather hoses, all wear and tear items which could need replaced on any car!
Luck of the draw my TT had 1 coilpack go in 18months and all other problems were in first two weeks. In the end down to a perised breather pipe.

if your gonna get one dont get a 150/180bhp one, lots of problems. go for the 225bhp (or 210bhp in earlier s3's) much better and with a map, 250-265bhp

iirc...
150 - K03
180 - K03s
210+ - K04
Not sure how the 150/180's are plagued with problems over the S3's then tbh?
