Some of you may have read my thread yesterday about what happened to my flexi pipe.

Told my old man about it and he hasn't got a clue what a flexi pipe is used for. He knows quite a bit about cars etc but has never come across 1. His argumnet is that if the exhaust is fitted correctly etc there should be no movement in it. The only thing he can think of is that if theres play in the engine mounts and the engine moves when its reved up.

Can someone shed some light on this please

Cheers

The engine does move when revved, changing gear etc. The manifold will move with the engine and transferring movement to the exhaust. Also the exhaust is "hung" on rubber hangers so theres some movement there aswell

Hasnt quite alot of cars have a piece of flexi pipe in the exhaust? I know iv seen a few, vectra b and astra mk4 gsi off the top of my head. Surely if he knows a bit about cars he'll know flexi pipes are used in exhsust systems? Usually near the down pipe / cat i think

I have always seen them as a bodge and never understood why you would want one.

I have never needed one.

TBH, it's a Powerflow exhaust - 'customised' to fit any car using generic exhaust components. IE. Bodged to fit. Therefore things like flexipipe are used.

OEM exhausts designed to fit the car don't have it, neither do decent customised exhausts (in general)

My downpipe comes with a flexpipe, simply because there is so much movement in the exhaust.

All corsa's have a flexi, It just isn't a bit of pipe like your thinking of, Its two flanges, with a cone gasket mesh and then the bolts with springs.

Lots of cars have it like the above. Exhausts are rubber mounted, but a bit of extra flex in the exhaust isn't a bad thing.

That's exactly why, engine mounts aren't solid, they're designed to have movement in them otherwise you'd have a running engine vibrating through the whole shell which wouldn't be pleasant. Fitting a solid exhaust would just cause damage to the joints as they tried to take up the movement

90% of vehicles have a flex of some sort, wether it be the 'mesh' flexi above or a spring kit. It's not a bodge, they come out of the factory like that

My aftermarket mani has felxi on the end of it. Have to fit stiffer aftermarket mounts to the engine too though to avoid buggering it up with excess movement

It's not down to how poorly the exhaust is made, is down to how much the manufacture can compensate for other variables. The ST without a updated gearbox bush means the engine moves about 20mm underload, Ford produce the flexi to help with this. Miltek have also added a flexi section to my manifold so that just compounds the point about shit aftermarket exhausts

The engine is on rubber mounts. It moves. Steel fatigues. You need a flexi pipe.

Not sure what the story is with solid mounts though.
