After selling up in May last year and getting a cheap runabout in order to pay off some debts, buy a house and save up, I'm in a position to get something half decent again.

I'm 25 now so it has to be something grown up which rules out VXRs, Clio/Megane Sports and the likes, along with something thats price isn't going to fall through the floor over the next three years which I'm planning to keep it. Although I would like some performance, so as not to get bored after a month I don't want anything that does 10 mpg.

I have a limit of £15k to spend and don't want anything more than 5 years old or more than say 40k miles.

Strongest contender so far is a 123d Coupe M Sport, which I went to BMW to test drive today but forgot to take my driving license

Going to drive a 120d too in order to decide if the 123d is worth the extra. Anyone had experience of these engines?

Love them, but did fail to mention the Mrs will have to drive it occasionally so nothing huge, could push to a 3 series but need another £2K for a decent one. Suppose I could save a bit longer.

I do love the post 06 3 Series Coupes (not keen on 5 doors) but again I seem to be able to get more for the money with a 1series.

They are small but so are most of britians roads, only time it will see a motorway is when we fancy a trip to bullring, Trafford centre, Ikea on the occasional weekend. Daily use will be urban roads on a 20 mile commute to work and back.

I'm struggling to find a better compromise of performance vs economy, remap will mean 260+bhp, over 500nm torque and still 45mpg at around £100 a year to tax.

I take it has to be a diesel of some sort?

Id rather a petrol but I'd need to work out how much more it's likely to cost in fuel, tax and insurance over the 123d.

For example I'd really like this but don't fancy being at the pump every other day with the price of fuel as it is.

Love the edition 30's, a remap filter and exhaust will see you at 300bhp.

The tax on the diesels will also be cheaper but you need to do a lot of miles to really see the benefits of running a diesel I think. The golf also holds it's value pretty well.

I'd say the golf will hold it's value just as much if not more than the BMW, especially that one considering the miles. I average 7-8000 miles a year so not a lot really.

The diesel pays off if your wanting to save cash but you really need to be travelling the miles to reap the benefits.

With the amount of miles your doing then something fun would be my choice.

Just worked out I'd be putting an extra £400 fuel in the golf over 8000 miles plus an extra £100 to tax, not sure about insurance but likely to be more. Not sure I can justify an extra £500 a year considering performance isn't going to be massively different.

I suppose if I wanted a performance petrol I'd need to look at something cheaper so the costs balance out.

Bollocks. You will see the benefits on fuel consumption alone even without doing alot of miles.

I would see your point if it was like for like on a brand new car,but deffo not on a 2nd hand car.

I can't bring myself to spend £15k on a car that will be over 10 years old when I need to try and sell it.

Sedona Reds growing on me.

If your comparing prices ones poverty spec 1.8 and the others M Sport pack 120d. Granted it's probs not worth double the price. Saying that I've been looking at the 123d hatches and theyre no difference in price to the coupe.
