Looking at getting a new camera want some think half decent to take quite arty pictures with, im new to photography, been looking at digital slr's & i believe there called bridge camera's? Want a set up were i can take good up close and far pictures in all condition's. My worry about an slr is will i be able to get a "all round" lense dont want to have to be changing them all the time when taking pictures or can you generally use one for a mixture of different shots? Got say £300 to spend i no it's not a massive amount but hoping you guys can recommend me some think for that?

If you think in the future you might get into it more get a DSLR (but make your budget a bit bigger). If its just to capture decent photos bridge cameras are great.

What is the actuall difference between a bridge and a digital slr? Is it purely the interchangeable lens?

Bridge are smaller, fixed lens.
SLR changable lenses, more image options (full manual, ISO control etc etc.). Some bridge cameras have these features, depends what you pick.

Aren't things like the Olypus Pen classed as bridge cameras? They've got interchangable lenses, as do a few other similar products (as the Pen is rather expensive).

I just got a Fujifilm S4000 Bridge Camera - £150-odd delivered on eBay
14MP
30x Optical Zoom
Varying modes, including manual for adjustment of ISO, Shutter speed etc
and a lot more...
VERY happy with the results so far;
Some examples of pics i've taken with varying zoom etc;
Cat on full 30x zoom;
2nd cousin on 20something x zoom;
Tyre on long zoom;
30x Zoom;
Sunset mode, no zoom;
No zoom;
Full zoom;
20odd x zoom;
I had 700 odd pics in around 5 days since receiving it - it's very nice to use indeed! Have many many more examples with varying zoom, lighting etc in this thread;

They still look quite blury to me.
You can pick up a DSLR for £300 ish now, if you can afford to i'd go for one of them.

With the digital slr do you need to no what your doing or can a complete novice pick it up? Also what would be the best starting set up to go for? Was thinking about a cannon 400d a while ago they still good?

You can stick them in auto mode and just take pictures like you would a compact.
It is a waste of a dslr really, if your aren't interested in photography then a bridge camera would probably be more up your street, a mate of mine has got a fuji HS10 and I took a few pictures with it and was very impressed.
