How much tread (on average) does a new tyre come with? Looking at part worns with 4mm, but dont know if this is half worn or 3/4s etc

Around 8mm usually, 4mm is still well above legal limit and would do for a good while, if they're cheap enough to make it worth it.

well if you buy a new tyre for £100 that does roughly 10,000 miles
and you're buying a part worn for £80 that is going to do 5,000 miles
In the long run you'd be better off getting the new tyre as you're getting twice as many miles for £20.

Since when has a new Pirelli in 205/40 17 been £100?
People are scared off by part worns as they see them as a risk... I understand that sometimes they're not a bargain, but in a lot of cases, it's a pretty good way of doing it and there is legislation there to protect the consumer. You have to have a license to sell part worns.
For example, a new 195/50 15 tyre cost me £36 plus fitting, a part worn in the same size was £15 fitted and had 6mm on... better deal?

Can only be taken into account if the tyres are the same make + model

Its only for tyres to have in the shed incase there is alot of snow then I'll go have them fitted and run them for a few months.
Dont want to fork out £400 for a set of 4 winter tyres and end up not having a bad winter or I'll end up offshore for most of it and not using my car.
Can be a good way to save money, or for cheap run arounds that you aren't keeping long or selling soon.

Is that coming from a southern softie that grinds to a halt when theres a small covering of snow on the ground
Dont think my work would appreciate me not being able to make a check in for offshore due to my car being useless in the snow
And for £80 why not

I didnt miss a day of work last year in the snow and even made it to the christmas party i even have a pic of MK i was driving through.
And if its really that bad you'd be better getting "proper" winter tyres with studs.

theres too many people on this site talking shite about how others should spend their money
why would he go to the expense and hassle of buying "proper" winter tyres when what he's getting will do the job for the few months that they might be needed? no doubt they will be there for the next winter too

Tbh winter tyres in that size (new or old) are going to do squat all good anyway.
Your better off with some smaller steel wheels for the snow mate.

Technically you could pay more in the long run if you are an idiot.

I sold 2 205/40/17s with 5mm tread on a few weeks ago for £40. And i also bought 2 195/50/15 for £15 a few weeks ago aswell. There is no real problem with buying part worns as long as they are not knackered.
Some people only buy part worns and never buy new.

Obviously be better than standard tyres on it just now. Dont fancy turning my car into looking like a shitter If a cheap set of decent smaller alloys came up I would, but haven't seen any so likely just stick with standards
