Well winter is fast approaching, and after struggling last year, I want a 4x4 this year, especially as I travel between farms for work and my horses which are in the middle of no where! I plan on keeping the astra and just leaving it sorn'd on my drive Oct-mar, and using the 4x4 in this time, then just swapping over for summer. I have about a grand to spend, don't want anything flash, just that will get me along the back roads etc. Obviously it's going to be older, is there anything people can recommend that's reasonably reliable for it's age and not extortionate to buy/run?

For a grand? Found a few on autostrader for a little over, but all 200+ miles away

The typical ones on autotrader for the price are terranos, vitaros, odd freelander, jeep Cherokee etc. Anything got a particularly bad reputation that I should avoid? Never owned a 4x4

For a grand I would be getting a frontera 2.8 but everyone on corsa sport who have never had any experience with them will tell you they are shit.
A vitara would be ok for a grand but are horrible on road and are small inside.
A shogun wouldn't be a bad choice, parts are expensive if it needs anything doing but are good cars.
freelanders are shit and arent proper a proper 4wd.
Cherokees are very good for what they are and a grand should get you a decent one, but they do rot fairly badly, parts are expensive, diesels have problems with cracking heads.
Have very little experience with terranos but a mate had a modifed one for a short time and it was really good offroad but don't know much else about them.
A hilux for a grand will be shit.
Might get a isuzu trooper for that money but avoid the 3.0 diesel.

Insurance youll have to check as i live in an sl postcode so i always pay loads for my ins. Tax is £200 odd a year.

more a softroader than an off roader. can tackle muddy terrain to an extent such as green laning, but take it to a proper off road course and it will end up stuck, beached, or broken unless heavily modified.
