I was driving this evening and looked at the volt gauge and noticed it was varying from 12v-13v. I know it normally runs at 14v does this mean by battery is dead or the alternator has gone?

When the revs get higher the volts get higher but it drops down to 12v when it's sat idling or under 2k revs.

Little help would be great!

Thanks in advance

The alternator should generate around 13.5-14.4V to allow for internal resistance in the battery. The symptoms suggest to me that the alternator is probably at fault

I'd wait a little until it gets worse unless its needed daily.

It will be the regulator on the alternator if it gets to 14.4v at higher rpm.

I need it daily yeah, so alternator is most likely to cause this then?

My mate told me to double check the drive belt so going to do that in a min

Just gone out to have a look at the drive belt and turns out the earth wire for the alternator has come off. Put it back on hopefully that will sort my problems, cheers for the help guys
