I saw this on a troll physics I think but it made me curious...

You know when you have a glass of water and a straw, you push the straw to the bottom and put your thumb over the top which holds the water in the straw when you lift it out.

Could this be done on a much bigger level? Like dipping a 5m wide straw into the sea and doing the same thing (blocking the end off)? I presume so, so is there anything stopping you from then being lifted up into the end of the massive straw so you can swim into it, go to the top, then swim back down and come out the bottom in which point gravity would take over and you would fall to the ground? Or imagine if the straw was turned upside down so you had to swim UPWARDS to fall DOWN.

Would this be possible?

Maybe the weight of the water would make it just fall out so lets imagine it was only 1m wide but like 100m long. Surely that's enough pressure to hold the water in and still be wide enough to swim in?

From a physics point of view. Yes it would work. The pressure from outside creates a vaccume meaning the water will stay in. The bigger the tube it will have more water in it but it will also have more air capacity. So will still work the same

there wouldnt be enough surface tension to hold the weight of that much water.

i think certain oil rigs use something along them lines to stay in place in the ocean but dipped in to the sand not water.

Simple physics. Surface tension over a small area (the diameter of a plain drinking straw) is quite high, enough to keep liquids from spilling out. Too large of an area and the liquid will fall out. Put a cup in a sink filled with water, let the water fill it completely, invert it, then lift it out bottom first. Splash, it all falls out.

ive done it with a glass, it can be done if youre very careful but thats probably the limit

To swin in it you'd need at least 2m dia tube.

A straw is about 6mm dia by 150mm long.

So youd need a tube 49.9m long by my calculations. Sounds about right imo.
