Ive got an iPad 1 that i want to use out and about but its just a wifi one. Can i use my iphone as a kind of modem?? I get unlimited data on my iphone 4 so would i be able to use the ipad through the iphone data for free?

Two options: First is to do it legitimately and ask your provider to add tethering to your account. The second is to Jailbreak your iPhone and install MyWi which will let you turn your iPhone into a mobile WiFi hotspot. There's a risk your provider could find out, it's happened in the States and people have been asked to stop/sent a bill for tethering. I used to use MyWi and had no issues with it, but I used it quite rarely.

I use HandyLight for tethering if I have to.
You have to set up a socks proxy though

I personally wouldn't pay for tethering. Fuck em! It's your data and you pay for it so you should be allowed to use it.
