Properly strapped down and a new well looked after sheet is not going to cause anything that a good spring cleaning (polish/wax) wont sort out!

My car is exposed to the weather 365 days a year and it's never been damaged by it

I would just put a nice soft bed sheet over the car 1st and then the car cover on top of that, that way the plastic won't be rubbing on the paint work.

My old man got me one for the workhorse, handy for when it snows/frosty out, a lot less hassle in the mornings!

they are good if the car is covered, i.e: in a garage, but outside in the wet they suck up water underneath and stay wet for longer.
almost better off letting the rain run off the car and just keep it waxed

Promote rust and you will find loads of little scuffs and swirls from the plastic

no point on a car you use daily if you have a car left outside for a long period of time then fair enough, i find they like to accumulate moisture after a while and help speed up the rusting process lol
