No I don't think so. With the government cutting so much army funding it isn't realistic for all education leavers to enlist, as the army hasn't got the jobs; and the government hasn't got the funds to pay them.
Plus selection standards are so much harder now, they really do only take the best.
However I rekon young offenders should have to do it in an attempt to give them some disapline, structure and a job. Would deffinately put them straight!

This plus if I het what your suggesting your saying those staying in education don't have to comply. That's also bad idea forcing people into education due to the cost. Plus nowadays in rough places or areas the damage is done well before they leave school.

I think should be like Turkey, every bloke must do it at some point! Can continue your education then do 18months national service, or go straight in after school!
Imagine would sort out a few of today's arseholes and make others grow some balls!

Why put lazy drop outs who don't care with people who want to do it as a career?

No, there should be an option there though. Instead of leaving school with no job or prospects.

Only people who want to do it as a career can't get jobs anyway.
I don't think it should be brought back because I wouldn't want to do it.
I'm quite happy sitting being an internet warrior instead of getting shot at tbh.
Also, why should education leavers be penalised over those who go and waste 4 or 5 years doing leisure science and won't get a job at the end of it anyway?

National service doesnt need to be military! It can be anything that is a service to the nation.. Cleaning up the streets, working with younger generations, helping the elderly, raising money for local causes.. etc. etc.

I think we should have an exchange programme; for every legitimate, hard working immigrant that moves to the UK, we should send back some dole scum to whatever country they've come from so that they have to work for their money.

Every person in the armed forces is there because they wouldn't have gotten a job elsewhere? Really? So all the medics etc who want careers working in field hospitals and at the very forefront of trauma work are there because no one else wanted them? Or the lads who wanted a career as pilots? Do you actually think before you let shite fall from the napper of yours at times John?

I'm not in support of it cos people like me would be penalised for working hard from the day I left school. Should be a court punishment though a judge can give out to young offenders

Sorry, I should have said normal soldiers.
It's a great way to become a pilot without spending 50k. Your standard idiot with a helmet and a gun though, my point stands.

Again, your wrong. To some point I'd say your right that some are there as a last resort. What about the specialist groups like the marines ect? No one goes in places like that as a last resort.

Is a marine a normal soldier? And being a marine doesn't say you would have been good at doing a normal job either tbh.

I think it would be a 50/50 situation, it would work for some but not for others.
Some people would get kicked out and simply end up in a worse situation they was in before they joined.
Some young people just need guidence and someone to put them in their place.
Military service I don't think is great personally but other forms of national service just so everyone has atleast given something back.

National service yes, military service no, people who don't want to be there don't make good soldiers, as proved on many occasions, falklands for example,
And people joining the armed forces as a last resort is utter bollocks, a few may do, but if you didn't wanna be there they wouldn't have joined.

Find me someone who genuinely wants to go to some smelly hot country to get shot at for crap wages, when there is a better paid Monday to Friday job available.
