I need a 3TB external hard drive. Has to be portable.
Loads to choose from and would like to pay as little as possible but get a decent product. Haven't got a clue what I am looking for. Just need it to transfer music files quickly. Its only being bought as I need to transfer just over 2TB of music to this one.
Anyone recommend any?

you wont get a portable one with 3tb mate biggest is 1tb
unless you get a 3.5" drive then you could get a 2tb

You see I haven't got a clue what I need. When I say portable I mean say the size of a router or slightly bigger and definately not as big as an xbox say?
I just need 3TB of storage for music. It will all be transferred off another HD to this one? I then want to be able to plug it into my laptop and pick and choose music to put on my laptop.

If you haven't got an urgent need for one right now I'd hold off buying one until early next year.
Because of the Thailand floods (loads of hard drives are manufactured there and of course the factories are completely flooded) hard drive prices have gone stupidly expensive at the moment due to people panic buying in bulk - I've seen some drives go up by at least 150% in price!

Seems a bit cheap, most 3TB drives are now £150 mark with the recent flood but if you can get it for that then it'll be fine.
Another option is to go down the NAS route ie: network storage device plugged into your router, can access storage anywhere then.

Dom - that's a bit too fancy. Purely need a big storage device that if I want music from I can plug into my laptop via USB.
What's the deal with powering them? Will the linked example above need a power supply plugged in to be able to use it? Is it a decent HD?

Yup, it's a powered drive so you'll need to use the include PSU. Can't vouch for their external drives but i haven't had too many problems with Seagate drives in the past.

The reviews aren't too promising. Clicking noise issues with the drive failing.
Maybe that's why they are so cheap.

They're just the same as the internal drives but in an external caddy.
People usually only come online to moan about things, hardly ever to compliment them.
I've used Buffalo, Iomega, Seagate and Western Digital's external drives and they're all built very well.

It'll have at least a 12 month warranty so if it breaks you can get Seagate to send you a replacement.
Well... That might be a slight problem at the moment though...
