Took my old mans Mondeo for an MOT last week.
Failed on emissions, HC reading being 1198ppm. Limit being 200ppm.
Never seen an emmisions reading so bad in all my time as a mechanic, and the car isnt throwing any fault codes?
Have cleaned EGR, and have an engine flush and service kit here to go on it as well whilst i'm working on it.
Anyone had this before, or any insight as to what could cause mad emmisions.
Thinking the cat may be fucked as well...

ignition problem, ie; unburnt fuel making it into the exhaust gas

Surely it would miss and show some form of fault code if this was the case?

Does it actually run alright?
I'd have a wild guess at cat but sounds like its either well fucked or its not just that. Don't know what else.

possibly not if your plugs are goosed and theyre sparking weakly, enough to keep it running but not enough to burn a full cylinder

Alex - Runs and drives alright.
Lee - Got plugs there as part of the kit so think i'll just clean the EGR, do the service and take it from there.

not take it to a friendly tester , i mean if its running fine there's not much point in splashing out for a new cat and all the rest when you could pay £20 extra or whatever it may be and have him stick a different car on the emissions

loads of things imo, lambda, coil pack, anything that owuld cause it to misfire, doesnt always leave a fault code, seen it happen to mine, dodgy coil pack, no fault code

Theres certain things you can turn a blind eye to but even the smell of it is terrible nevermind the facts on paper, i wouldnt expect even my friendly tester to pass it.
Plus its my old mans motor, and i'd rather his car was spot on.

plugs or coil pack... service it and check emissions again.
Could also be Lambda.
