I am looking to pick up a HID kit (H4) as a Christmas gift for my dads 2002 Rav4.
Being out of touch of car parts and prices I was expecting to pay £40 odd quid, but most are £70+?
Can anyone recommend a good seller?

Information - Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system.
Where such systems are fitted, they must work; however, it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of self levelling systems. In such cases, the benefit of the doubt must be given.
Headlamp washers may work in conjunction with the windscreen washers (when the dipped beam headlamps are switched on) or by a separate switch.
HID lamps may be identified by:
taking a few seconds to reach full intensity
having a bluish tinge to the light
having an igniter module/inverter behind the headlamp
having ¡¥DCR¡¦ marked on the headlamp lens.
HID headlamps use high voltage and extra care should be taken when inspecting these items.
method of inspection
Where HID or LED dipped beam headlamps are fitted, switch on the headlamps and check the operation of any headlamp levelling and cleaning devices fitted.
Reason for rejection
A headlamp levelling or cleaning device inoperative or otherwise obviously defective

ebay or there is always someone on the forums selling them. All made in same chinese factory I'm sure
Will be or has been and MOT fail if it has no standard level adjust and washers i think.
Depends how easy it is to change the bulb on the car

eBay and use hid-direct got mine from there last week £42.99 delivered and arrived less then 24 hours after buying them free delivery and 2 year warranty

it takes 5 minutes to remove them depending on your car, hardly a lot of hassle for once a year

Maybe but I bet the plod will come down harder now they are officially illegal.
Almost certain to void your insurance aswell.

its hardly going to void insurance, i can see people getting into trouble with the law hence my reasons for not fitting mine. not worth the hassle really. surely theyre to be outlawed for some legitimate reason

You can get self-levelling kits, Hella rings bells, but they aren't cheap from what i remember. Could also rig up a washer jet fairly easily as well.

With the way the insurance companies are these days, don't be so sure. They look to avoid paying out in any circumstances and are quite happy to cancel peoples insurance if theres a hind of dishonesty there.

Too much hassle now with HID's, people never seem to have them set up correctly and on a 4x4 the problem will be even worse.
People just put them in and thats it, instant blinding.
I've given up with them now, i'd rather invest £20 in some good quality halogens (Philips Blue Vision for example)

your talking about undeclared modifications, thats a whole different ball game, in which case you get no sympathy from me and dont deserve any money if you spank it. I have never had undeclared modifications and pay through the nose for it.

I still don't think an older car fitted with HIDs has any reason to fail a MOT tbh. I've highlighted the reason for this below. If the vehicle isn't fitted with the mentioned washers and self levelling system the why would it fail? If the systems aren't there then they can't be tested and it doesn't actually state the car will fail having HIDs fitted without these systems.

The levelling device fitted doesn't work IMO.
Most (all?) cars have manual levelling, which isn't sufficient for HIDS, so it's fitted and doesn't work as specified.

Maybe, but it specifically states "self levelling device". If the official statement read must instead of may then I wouldn't be doubtful it even says "where such systems are fitted, they must work"
I've had a look around the web but there is no hard evidence from VOSA or the police to actually state HIDs are illegal

The only new MOT rule coming in is that all towbar electrics have to work, was chatting to a tester who is one of my customers

No i'm not.
T&C somewhere in the insurance will more than likely state that the car and parts must be road legal. Less of a problem at the moment, but as soon as they're on the MOT check in a few weeks I can guarantee it will be a problem. You aren't going to be able to phone the insurance company and declare an illegal mod without questions being asked.
