Anybody tried the burning wire wool spirals?
Id like to give it a try. How do you keep the wool burning?

never tried it but would like to, as andy said its quite dangerous and makesure you wear a hooded top otherwise burnt head/neck.

Yeah, I suppose its a bit like grinding without a guard. I'll grab a shit hoody, scarf and my bro's ski goggles and get some practice.
What sort of ISO setting would you recommend on a 30 second shutter?

I just sprinkled it over the flame by rubbing it between my hands, gets the same effect

so alot of methods use a whisk on a string, went and bought a cheap whisk and a roll of wire wool.
tryed iginition with a 9V battery but hardly even got a spark.
inovated my own way of ignition by stuffing paper into the center of the whisk and then wrapping the wool around it. stays lit long enought to begin spinning.
went out into town with some friends and got these

Looks good.
Might be worth focussing manually while you know the distance and auto isn't reliable.

quite difficult to manual focus with my camera. no viewfinder so have to rely on the screen which just shows up darkness. had someone stand with a torch to focus on but once they started spinning the wool it went out of focus. might go out again after christmas and have a mess about with the focus... or even borrow my missus new propper camera

auto focus on someone with a torch then once its focused flick to manual focus so it doesn't change.

a little bit. on my first try i felt it burning on my hair. my friend hit himself in the side of the head with the whisk still glowing.. was quite lucky. was suprised how long it carrys on burning after it flys off

no, the wire wool breaks off in chunks, still burning.
im using a sony NEX-3 on a 15 second shutter at -1.0 exposure
Tripod is just a cheap argos one

stay carefull. it'll alot more violent than it looks. hoods up, eyes down.. id have prefered some kind of eye protection.
try spinning unlit, hit my friend in the face a few times when he was trying to orb.
if you camera has the option to save in RAW & jpg id use that

Had a mate fully covered do all the spinning for us whilst we took shots
No injuries or burns!  Going to try some more in the New Year!
