hi guys. just to prove a point to kris (dick vale) td. he reckons that u have to flat down and reprime everything u want to paint. he doesnt believe me that when a car gets resprayed that the surface of the paint is just flatted down and then directly painted/lacquered. so will some of you guys try telling him that coz he wont listen to me. then again i forgot, he knows it all.

the best way to do it is to wet flat everything then reprime it! Thats what my two local bodyshops do, even the one my car is in.

austin pxx, im sorry but i only want qualified painters/metal workers to reply. anyway if ur bodyshop do that then its there choice but i panels dont need reprimed unless they r in such bad nick. one point tho most bodyshops now dont even wet flat as it introduces uneccesary water into the prep work. what we would do is da the panel out first then wet flat after then go to paint.

dont get me wrong its not gonna do any harm but its a waste of time. plus thats not what im arguing about. kris td reckons that u cant paint over old paint when its been flatted. he says u need to re prime b4 u can to paint.

to get the best effect and finish it is always best to re prime it before spraying, ill even confirm it with the shop.

yeah, why dont u ask ur painter. 'can u flat down paint and repaint it without having to prime?' then hell tell u yeah. hes probably repriming ur whole car coz most of it has been modded and therefore most of its gonna need primed so hell just prime the whole car.

and he said that everything that needs resprayed has to be flatted down, re primed and resprayed? i dont beleive that. so that must mean that every painter ive worked with and the 2 bodyshops ive worked in r wrong. and the guy i work with at weekends painting bikes is wrong. i dont think so. this is so basic that i cant even believe weve started such a row about it. ok then if u cant paint over old paint, how do u blend repairs into old paint. or when its multi colour car how do u paint it without having to prime again between colours?

if youre spottin areas with primer the top coat will 'eat' into the edge of primer finishing and give u nice pretty patterns in paint! I'd want the whole thing priming
