Drove away from the house earlier and noticed the car wasn't going right. Initially thought it was the clutch as it was jumpy when pulling away. Bit further down the road the coolant light came on so I pulled into sainsburys to fill that up and noticed oil everywhere.

Engine sounds as if it is running fine but when you have the bonnet open and rev it up you can hear a hissing noise (Best way to describe it). There is no oil on the underside of the bonnet which I can only assume is good.

Any ideas?

Forgot to mention, I took the engine oil cap off for a look and there was white stuff underneath, don't know if that's relevant but I've never seen it there before

You'd have to take it to a garage to answer that.

Usually about £200 to just change the gasket although if you've run it and it's got hot then it'll need a skim which puts about another 100 quid on.

Can be if its a difficult engine to take to bits or the parts are expensive, will need a cam belt as well as the gasket.

woah woah woah... may just be condensation in the breather, check the dip stick if the oil is fine down there you have a blocked breather or just condensation.

just to add it may be a split water hose - that makes the hissing, or a split rad the oil leak may just be a leak i would wipe the block with a cloth and turn the car over and leave it for ten mins, turn it off and wait for any new drips. (piece of clean car under the engine bay for this) do the same with the coolant ( make sure you have some in firth though.

If there's oil in his coolant and coolant in his oil the liklihood is that it's HG.

And if you're paying £100 for a head skim you're getting shafted Ian

well if the oil low down the engine is fine then start to look for other faults as if it was head gasket the most, if not all of the oil would be like mayo.

The mayo type substance was minimal and only around the engine oil cap as far as I can tell. I really hope its not head gasket, somebody said it could be oil pressure gauge?

Would it help if I got a video of the engine & the noise it makes when I rev the engine? Unable to get it to a garage for a few days yet and just want to know what it is really.
