Rite i've not really been looking for a job as given the current climate i didn't think it was worth it. Been in my current job 3 years and the company has gone from strength the strength throughout the recession etc...

But was recently contacted about a couple of jobs; one was in Bristol (where my current office is) which is circa 1hr each way; have been doing this for 5+ years now so use to it really. And the other job is local, prob 20 min drive not through any cities. I have had an interview for the one in Bristol as thought what the hell may aswell see; the job seems good etc i quite liked the people and they liked me enough to offer me it at the top of the salary bracket it was advertised for. The other job i am due to be interviewed for next week, but i know for a fact I am the only one they have selected to interview. Out of those two i would rather the local one, for obvious reasons so will wait and see about that!

However my real dilemma is whether or not to move jobs at all; the basic pay is a couple more grand than my basic. However over the past year some of the things i have been working on are things which only I have been able to do; and the work load i have is so large that they have for the past year allowed me to do as much overtime as i want when it suits me from home. I have also pretty much worked from home for the pat 9 months until recently until they employed a junior who i have to show the ropes etc..

I have done so much work over the past financial year i would in essence be taking a £25K paycut if i move jobs; however i feel i may get some of my life back! I generally log onto work at 6am most days and log off at 11pm most nights; i dont work solid through this as i take time out in the evening to spend some time with my family and put my daughter to bed; so generally take 2 hours between 5 and 7 each night and then work infront of the TV after that! Even now when i am back in the office i generally pick the laptop up at 7 and carry on until 11!!!

I all honesty it does impact on family like and although the extra money is nice there has to be a line. I know if i stop doing the extra at my current job the work will just stack up and it will become very stressful!

The thing is i like where i work, i am not watched by my manager etc and respected throughout the firm at all levels for what i do and can do.

Im not sure if its a case of better the devil you know than the devil you don't; or whether i need to step away from my current company and resume a more normal life as there is more to life than work!! But in doing so dropping a fair whack of cash!

I am a software developer by the way; currently specialising in Legal development working for a large London based law firm

Not sure what to do

fuck working those hours thats all I have to say, with a 6am - 11pm work day, I know you have breaks like but that aside the money would be a secondary issue for me, its ok having aload more cash, but its not much good if you dont have time to spend it.

work it out per hour and you will probably be better off with the new job

If you can afford the pay cut then do it, there's more to life than money and working 12 hour days. Spend more time with your family.

Just cut cut down on the OT on your current work then if you like it there, stick to normal office hours & dont do anything outside of that. Im pretty sure working 6am-11pm is illegal as by law you must rest for at least 8hrs a day!?

He's not being forced to do that though, he's doing it as optional overtime.

I'd probably stay where you are but ask for someone else to help with the work load as you're going to be taking a cut.

There's a lot more to life than money and work. I would definitely take a pay cut to work normal hours, would have to pay me a hell of a lot to basically devote my life to working.

Although saying that you've had/got some very nice expensive motors haven't you? Would a 25k cut mean youd have to be more sensible and buy a diesel?!

i drive a diesel now!! Those were the days before a wife, baby and house!!

I would love to just work normal hours again where i am; but im not to sort of person who likes to let people down so thats why i end up carrying on until the late hours! Have done a 6am until 1:30am with just really stopping for food and walking the dog, this was because we had a tender process for around £15million of work out which a 100 or so's peoples jobs are reliant on!!

I have got my mortgage and lived on my basic pay for a few years and to be honest its more than enough; but there is always something else you want to buy or pay for so when you have the option to its easy to justify doing the work, been changing things in the house with the money such as new bathrooms, windows etc.. Also paid for my wedding in full myself this year with no debt so things like that is helped with. But there is always something else you want so i have been carrying on!

If you're newly married surely working that much will eventually start to put a strain on the marriage? Time to pu the family first Seeing as you're already in the dreaded diesel

Something to factor in. A lot of jobs don't pay overtime. I mean, my job I stay up till 3am some nights to crack on with some work - but don't get paid OT - it's almost just part of the job to give a little extra some times. (Although I suppose by doing it, it does mean targets are past and money is made through that).

But my point is, you have no guarentee that you won't be expected to still work OT at your new job (with the 25k paycut) and not get paid for that overtime.

With software development, its hard to 'stop working' - even when you haven't got code infront of you, you are thinking about how you're going to do something or stressing about a go live date approaching.

I just think you need to have a word with your boss at work, explain the situation and say you just need to work a few less hours (for family life) but can't afford to lose the money - they may do something to help keep you (which is helpful to them due to your domain knowledge).

e.g. They may get a junior in to help you out with your workload / and give you a rise in basic = best of both.

I regularly work over and above my contracted hours. I get a great salary but I'm expected, if I want to progress, to work extra hours for no extra pay.

^^ exactly.

That's what I'm trying to say to NovaGTE2 - he may think he's getting an easier life by leaving, but may actually end up worse off by working similar, but getting less.

Just turn the PC/mobile off lol

Times at my work things can get pretty fruity, expectations to work on, get the job finished which is fine on the odd occasion but theres no chance id allow it to become the norm.

Yeah i know what you mean about working when you are not working in this line of work. I know paid overtime is a real privilege but i think they know that its a little over what they can expect and know i could get a better paid job elsewhere with less hassle as have been approached by rival firms on numerous occasions. My basic isn't amazing which again is why the overtime is offered i think.

Think i might have a word with my boss about the position and what i have been offered; she has a family herself and very down to earth so im sure she will understand.
