Hi all,

Got a mate here that has an external HDD with problems. Basically all of a sudden the drive can't be accessed. It can be seen and recognised in windows as a drive, but it can't be accessed, says it's 'failed to initialise' or something along those lines. He's tried taking it out of the external case and plugging it straight in as an IDE drive in the machine, but it gives the same error.

What's the best plan of attack? Will data recovery software do anything?

Cheers

Worth trying data recovery stuff but don't know if it'll work with that.

I've got an example here right now that I couldn't get to show in windows, couldn't get any imaging or any tools at all to boot actually, laptop just hung when trying to boot.

I've booted to parted magic on a hirens boot cd and the linux install is letting me copy some data off it.

Really slow so it must take lots of tries for each bit, its working which is the main thing.

Doesn't sound good...

But yes I'd go with John's suggestion of using Parted Magic and try to get it going that way.

So, I need this Hirens boot cd? Sure I already have that somewhere actually from past problems of my own.

Thing is, I have to advise this guy without being there myself to have a look. Not gonna be easy

Cheers for help

Is it going to be straight forward for someone with zero pc skills? I'm doubting it will

Thing is,I don't think he wants me to take the drive home to do as I assume it's got some dirty porn on there and other such things
