right i had and argument whilst very drunk with someone at a house party...
they who apparently had a degree in maths and who are really clever think that if you add drinks together you will add the % together too.
for example..
one shot of vodka (40%)
+
one shot of whisky (40%)
+
one shot of taboo (15%)
=
a drink that is now 95%
i told her it doesnt work like that and it works more like..
40+40+15 = 95
95/3 = 31.6
(because there were 3 shots so im using a shot as a unit of measure)
so the percentage of the drink would be then 31.6.. as i am under the impression its a percentage of the volume?
who is right? or is niether right?

percentage goes off volume, a pint of Carling in a pub is 4.5%, a pint of whiskey and coke using a standard 25ml measure is 5% ish, the whiskey is 40% but because so much coke has been added it has weakened it

I dont know if your way is right (i suspect it is, seems logical) but her way certainly isnt
Ask her so if i take
one shot of vodka (40%)
+
one shot of whisky (40%)
+
one shot of taboo (15%)
=
a drink that is now 95%
That and now add a 10% drink, is the content of the drink now 105% alcohol?

You are correct.
Dividing by 3 only works if the three shots are equal in volume but yes, you can't add another drink at get pissed at 105%

its 31.6%
95ml of alcohol per 300ml of total liquid (using 100ml of each for ease of maths for idiots)
but from a pub a shot of vodka and whisky would be 25ml each and taboo would be 50ml due to the weights and measures act. so if you ordered a standard shot of each youd have a 100ml drink at 27.5%

actually dont even bother explaining things to idiots like that, just confuse them.
a litre bottle of vodka is 37.5% and theres 40 shots in it, so by their logic if you poured the bottle into 40 equal shots each one would be less than 1% alcohol

Hope its not more than one, 190% would be a lot in two drinks

It's an average so you're right, two shots of alcohol at 50% is still 50%, it's units that you add up

That's the reason so many students still can't get a job when they graduate. They have a certificate but not necessarily the knowledge that it supposidly represents.

On another note shots in Engalnd are 25ml, but in Northern Ireland they are 35ml

I'd go with when the chemical mixture has taken place you would have to work out the alcohol content of the resultant liquid on its own merit.

35ml in England under the weights and measures act and ha been for about 10 years when it was increased from 25ml to bring the number of units in line with a 175ml glass of wine or pint of average beer. 50ml is for spirits below 15% abc iirc

I could have sworn they were 25ml when I was at Billing this year. I must be mistaken.
