Right, so i'm trying to source an x18xe1 at the minute and have come across one with potential on the bay. I keep getting told by my dad to get an engine that i've seen/heard running, but it's kinda hard with these engines as no-one really sells them as they do with c20xe's and LET's. So, would you purchase from the bay, if they have history to show services etc, and can get a vid to show it running? Obviously with the hassle Dan's had with his turbo, i don't want that to end up happening to me

I've bought and sold engines online, just a risk you take.

I bought an engine down the road which turned out to have the timing out by 3-4 teeth, risk you take with any engine tbh no matter where you buy it.

From the other side of the table, I've sold engines which have come straight out of working cars.

That said, it's very difficult to ensure they don't get contaminated when they're being removed, condition beforehand etc.

Also very easy to sell a dodgy one if you want to.

Never been an issue for me buying them because I normally just get the whole car as a starting point, which if you've got any room at all to do it is the way to go. You also get loads of other freebies then.

Seems like a bit of a lottery tbh. I'm finding it hard to find a local engine so i'm having to resort to looking further afield, but obviously that means having to take someones word whether it's a good engine or not. As you say Ian, easy to fob off a dodgy one over the net. The one i've found is from a 'experienced breakers' so i'm thinking that maybe it's a bit better buying from them than just some random bloke as it's a business. If i had the space, ideally i'd find a donor car to have everything from but i barely have enough space to work on mine at the minute what with my mums signum spitting the dummy out recently which is now sat on the drive, as well as Dan's turbo. It's times like this i wish i had a unit or something to work in .

Adam's one's a bit out of my budget tbh, i have had a look at the ad though Chris .

As generation says, could end up spending lots rebuilding something like an xe or a LET, which is what's kinda spurring me on for the 1.8, if you get a bad one it'd be cheaper and easier to just buy a whole different engine sorta thing

An experienced breaker would probably give somesort of short warranty incase it's buggered once fitted and tested.

Thing is, it could run and then be fucked in a weeks time anyway. I would be rebuilding them regardless of where I got it from so wouldn't let it bother me. If your that worried buy a doner car and strip it, will make money back on the parts

Bought my X18XE1 off eBay - never had a problem with it.

Unless you count the seller not sending all the components for the ECU System as a problem, which I didn't really.

I bought a full engine & gearbox still bolted to a Vectra B subframe (mounts, AC pump etc tc still attached too)

They will only give warenty if its going to be a direct replacement not a conversion.

I might chance it with one from a breakers as that seems about the only way im gonna be able to get one any time soon, gonna ask lots of questions and get as much info as i can from them before i do purchase, if i do.

Just get on the cheeky bids for local stuff and go get it.

I wouldn't pay breaker prices when in reality you're no better protected. They could easily get out of warranty by saying it was run without fluids, contaminated during the work etc.

Took a risk with a 1.8t AUQ engine that had already been removed on ebay once, won it at a price alot cheaper than it was worth. Took the risk and went up to manchester, brought it back and fitted it and it was spot on with no issues at all.

Luck of the draw tbh.

I bought mine on ebay as a running engine, didnt see it running or anything though. It ran sweet but smoked its tits off.

If I was to do it again I'd either buy a donor car, make sure I saw the engine running first or strip the engine down properly to make sure everything was in order before putting it in the car rather than just giving it a basic service like I did. Lesson learnt the hard way lol.

What about this.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vauxhall-Opel-Vectra-1-8i-16v-a-c-1998-S-reg-Arctic-/370540155769?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item5645ea1379#ht_1466wt_1031

Find out what engine is in it first of course, may be an XE as not sure when started putting the XE1's in the the Veccy, Mine came out a S Reg Astra.

It does state its a X18XE but the power is 113.
