just put the girlfriends car up for sale as its not the best on fuel so look for something under 100k miles and for arround £2500-£3500 which returns good fuel economy, she likes the 1.8 astra coupes as we used one for pvs and returned over 400miles for a full tank which was good but is there any other options?
shes got a vw at the moment with the 1.6 sr engine which in 5th on the motorway just screams, i believe its more of a city car then motorway cruiser which isnt good as it spends most of its time on the motorway
any ideas?

Well it's better than suggesting a bmw 323 as a cheap to run and small car

I've not driven one of them on the motorway, any good ? can't imagine the 65bhp model is that great but the 80bhp should be a bit better.
i would go for a 1.9 tdi golf or bora, will sit on the motorway with ease and return decent mpg, maybe the diesel vauxhalls are decent but not driven them.

Sitting at 60 in a 172/182 gives you good mpg figures compared to sitting at 70. From memory theres a big difference.

Sitting at 70 in one regularly would be torture.

City cars as a rule are not designed for long motorway journeys. Clio was pap on Mways. Too noisy, wrong gearing.
Buy my Jeep for £1500

I've got a Clio DCi 65. It's plenty if your looking for a cheap running car. 65hp but 160nm of torque. It's got plenty of guts for motorway use IMO.
And still returning 50mpg.

It's got nothing to do with guts. It's to do with sound deadening, short wheelbase, wind noise, short town gearing, absence of sixth gear and uncomfy seating
