This is a bit of an old topic, which I've sat on for a while.
Unsure if its been posted, but still.
If you find yourself with an old 1st gen ipod nano, you can swap it.
Having recalled them, Apple are infact swapping them with 6th Gen ones. (Sent brothers off)
So if you want a new one in general, or have one you don't use and could sell a 6th Gen on, ebay then this will be for you.

Follow the links in the story (sorry on my phone atm) and eventually you can fill in the details to apply for the package to return your ipod in

Hmm, hadn't thought of that.
All they asked for was the serial number (via apple log in)...

I was going to get one of eBay but it's a gamble, only certain serial numbers apply

I thought it was only between those dates (mine was I gave it away though) but IIRC, and knowing apple, a new model would of come out the year after anyway

Either way a £30 gamble isn't much, you could use it for your car or something.

Looking on eBay they normally sell for around £80 so could be £60 profit there. I was told (not looked) but on apple site it says they swap it just for another 1st gen (obviously these are no longer made)

Just been through the whole thing, enter serial number, register with apple etc... then it took me to a page about dodgy adapters? nothing to do with the 1st gen ipod? :S
Edit - Tried again and it worked. Just have to wait for box to arrive to send mine off. Great Post!

• This article was amended on 16 November 2011. The original referred to the first-generation Apple iPod nano being "recalled" over safety fears, and said that owners of this model will receive a free current model once they return their iPod to Apple. Apple have not issued a recall but are offering a free replacement, which will be a replacement first-generation iPod nano rather than a current model.

i'd keep the original and sell it in 10yrs time when no one kept theirs and they are worth money for the collectable value.
