MX5 in the wet?
I'd say you could pick up a better E36 than them for 1500 quid.

This with a M50 manifold would do the job. You could get it for less than 2k.

Over a curry at the weekend we were hatching a plan for a weapon of a car....
We've seen a V10 M5 engine for sale - but the question was what shell
E30, Capri or Mk1 Escort RSR tubed shell
Anyway.... back to reality.

loads of front camber castor and tubbed arches so you can get crazy steering angles
trick diff or just a welded one
prob a bit of toe out on the rear to make it more twitchy

E36's msport and IS didn't have LSD as standard so be carefull.
The very early 328i sport (95/early96) had an LSD, the later models has ASC. If its got the switch in front of the gearstick, it won't have a slippy diff.
IS's didn't have 1 as standard, but im not sure if it was possibly available as an optional extra. I havn't seen many if any for sale with 1 from factory.

E30. My old E30 would go sideways at any given chance and cheap and easy to modify. Coilovers. Cage, one seat and weld the diff. Done.
