I've had this car for a few years now. its a std engine, air filter has been taken off for air box. the only modifications it has are as follows
18" bbs reps
lowering springs
irmscher grill
3litre for to help with the flat spot
tow bar
a few months ago, the steering rack decided to give up and drop all its pas fluid all over the road. its pretty much just sat there since, as its not something i have the tools to fix on the drive, or the space tbh. this morning i was going to drive it to the garage and leave it to have a rack to be fitted. the alt belt was smoking, then snapped. so om guessing perhaps the alt is seized. can't get my hand down to it to spin the pulley. so this put an end to sending it off to be fixed.
question i have is, what is it worth to be sold as spares/repair? as its probably going to cost a couple hundred quid to put it back on the road at least. I'm really not all that sure what to do with it. fix it, then keep it, as its not worth a massive amount of money. it still has mot on it until about july, 112k miles i think. minor bit of rust on the drivers door, other than that for a nearly 13 year old car its not too bad.
fix it and keep it?
fix it and sell it?
sell it as spares?

Dropping the subframe is fairly major but it would give you great access to both of those.
I was surprised how comparably easy it was to taking the engine out traditionally. If you have the means to lift the car, its probably worth giving that a try. It's worth more working.

Fix it Nic. You have access to a ramp and i'm sure you have the spanner skills to sort it out.
Whether you want to keep it or sell it after is up to you. As Ian said it will be worth more working and its no good to you just sitting on your drive. I bet your Corsa will cost a fortune to run as a daily as well.

I would definetly fix it and then decide if you want to sell or keep it. For somebody who can obviously do any mechanical work on a vauxhall i dont see why you dont want to fix it.
Would be hard to get the money back by splitting it, vectra parts dont sell well imo.

problems i have are moving the car to a ramp. i can ask my mate if i can use his ramp, but i can't leave the car in bits on it. which is another issue.
looking at what id want to replace it with, i just can't actually afford to buy what id want either. even selling the vectra and the corsa probably wouldn't cover the cost of a new car. id probably buy one on finance for the first time in my life lol. i really like that gsi, its been a great car right up until the rack went. i need a diesel though. i can't afford to run that gsi as a towng car and a daily driver anymore. fixed or not fixed, i kinda need to sell it. sadly.
edit, well, i don't need to sell it. it just costs me too much to run. that 1.2 corsa i have now has kinda shown me how cheap it can be to run a car. sadly, its just not good enough for towing......

Alt belt snapping could be pas pump seizing due to lack of fluid? I'd fix it and sell it, you'll make more in the long run.

If its too expensive to run then you need to shift it IMO, engine gearbox wheels suspension and kit will sell easy I would have thought?
Scrap the rest.

You'll need to find out how much you can get as is then how much you can get for it fixed. Add uo the cost and time it'll take... is it really worth it? I'm in the same position with the corsa mate

checked the pas pump, spins freely. the belt was smoking before it snapped, was coming from the back of the engine, alt/tensioner area. it had a tensioner about a year ago, i can't get my hand down to check if the alt turns just yet. will jack it up tomorrow and have a go.

yeah thats my mates where i do the corsa. i couldn't really leave it on the ramp as he needs that most days as thats his work/business. at a push i could ask work if i could borrow my van as it has a tow bar on it, just they don't usually let us out of hours.
finance, I'm talking like 4k for a newer shape vectra diesel. nothing too expensive. say over 2 years.

Would it not be better to take a loan out if it's just for 2 years? You'd get a better interest rate, I'd have thought.
I would like to say fix the Vectra then sell it for something cheaper to run, but it doesn't sound like it'll be easy. If you can find out the difference between splitting it and selling it working then that would help make the decision, really.

may as well fix it, at least you know whats what on the car then.
if you replace it with something similar, who knows what may go wrong with that, looks nice for a 2nd car

Fix it and leave them wheels on.
My steering rack went on my vec gsi last year and although it was an £800 fix it was worth it as they are such nice car to drive.
I'm sure a man of your skills could change it if you had access to a ramp.

That was all in parts and labour.
It's the labour involved in dropping the subframe. The rack was only £250 iirc.
