What does one have to do in order to be able to import a car into the UK and get it road legal over here, and also I know this is a "how long is a piece of string" type of question but likely costs involved - both for bringing it over (from Australia in this case ) and whatever HMRC/DVLA want as well.
Thanks

Also - I read on some website somewhere that if you can prove you've owned the car for 6 months or whatever you don't have to pay one or both of those, is this correct?

£500 shipping for a working car, from Japan. Thats on a loads of cars on a ferry type affair, rather than in a container. Probably slightly more from Aus.
Then the fees as AK said.
You then have to pay 10% of (the price of the car + shipping). Then with that amount, you have to pay 20%, so two loads of tax.
Don't forget the first MOT and anything to make it legal, then the first registration fee/tax at the DVLA.
