is there any way to connect my laptop to my desktop so i can use the laptops wifi to conect the desktop to the internet?

See above, although that makes it seem long winded looking at it.

IIRC in XP you just go on network connections, right click your wifi one, tick connection sharing then plug you desktop into your laptop via ethernet. Should be job done.
