The headgasket seems to have gone on my corsa, theres water in the oil, lots of steam coming out of the exhaust. Is £200 a good price including skim?

local garage to me would charge similar if your keeping the old timing belt fitted.

Check what parts they intend to fit.

A headgasket kit isnt expensive, skimming is usually about £30 down here and about 100quid labour sounds normal to me

sounds about right, as fazza said they may intend to refit your old timing belt but at that a belt from my local motorfactors was £38 on its own so never now

As far as I'm aware parts are cheap, but the labour involved is intensive.

One garage quoted me £500 - Purely because they said the job takes a lot of time and wasn't worth their trouble.

I ended up getting it done at another garage for £180.. but it went again after 2 months. £200 seems a little too cheap, but if you know and trust the garage then id go for it.

£200 sounds about right, I certainly wouldn't pay more just because £200 isn't enough.

May as well do the belt at the same time though, which may put the price up a bit.

Yes belt will be done, also drive belt and tensioner. He also suggested valve stem oil seals, but these were done 18 months ago

I paid £300 + VAT for labour when I had mine done. That included changing the water pump and new cambelt kit. I then spent around £114 on parts, water pump, cambelt kit, head set, head bolts and oil filter.

He said he'll strip it down tomorow, take the head to get skimmed, they do them while you wait, then rebuild next day. We make most of his business so he does everything fairly

So £200 is a bargain.

Ok thanks for your help everyone. I know this mechanics a good bloke just wanted to compare prices.
Had a word and with both belts replaced, tensioners and waterpump, looking at £300. Cant say im not dissapointed tbh, only had this car a couple of weeks. Whether or not the seller knew is irrelevent all i can do is get on with it and get it fixed.

if the heads coming off to get skimmed i would never put the same belt back on. The waterpump and tensioners if you have no proof of when they were changed its best getting it done. You dont want to pay 250 pounds for the water pump or tensioner fail and the belt go slack and knacker some valves. Atleast you knwo these parts will bee good for another 40k miles

Don't see how they charge extra for putting new belts on. As they need to come off and be put back on anyway.

Got my car back today. Very pleased. They've sorted a number of extra problems for me. Must say it is running a lot better. They tidied all the wiring from the powerbox which was shabbily done and a mess. Gear linkage sorted, had problems getting into first and second. Overall very happy with it.
