Just been offered a Mk3 Golf Gti as a swap for my 306... seen as the guy with the Fiesta messed me around.
What are the like as a whole? Just not sure if i like the colour or not
I found myself looking at it a month or 2 ago but i never spoke to him about it, and now it has just popped up again and he is interested in a swap.
Here is what the ad says;
golf gti colour concept p reg very clean and rare car taxed till end of june ,tested till dec, low 100k miles full heated leather ,hid headlights, 17" alloys with mint tyres, drives perfect with not 1 hidden fault , folder buldging with reciepts including original bill of sale . was owned by a vw enthusiast
also the cambelt was done 10k ago.
few pics to look at too.
So what to look out for please would be a help and also what are they like?
Cheers

love the look of that. only problems I had on mine were the door part of the sills tend to rot.
great cars though, return pretty good mpg and nippy enough(not quick, but not that slow imo)

Not bad cars TBH. Not sure if they're worthy of their GTi badge personally but nonetheless, reliable cars if looked after, which that one looks to have been!

I've 3 mk3's just now. Always liked them and probably always will.
However they've got there faults.
Common for water leaking into cabin from s couple of areas.
Sills rotten due to be being jacked up on the sill itself.
Ignition switches became tempramental.
But whatever the fault, its always cheap and easy to fix.

Thats not alot to worry about then, this also has a push button start.
Will check the sills etc for rot but he says everything is mint so hopefully it is.
Just been told it has a cat 1 alarm aswell that puts windows up etc and sent me an engine bay picture and 1 with all the reciepts etc. sounds good!

Both my vr6 and 8v have push button starts as the ignition switches are pooped. So prob same reason as to why that has a push button too.
Hope its all ok for you mate as they're fun to drive.

both my mk3s have been shite - riddled with faults
But then again, both mine are the wrong side of 130000 miles
Rot is a concern with mk3s - especially the sills and behind the plastic arch trims

If its a 16v your laughing for converting to vr6. If its an 8v its a little more work.

had a vr6 for 6 months and apart from the starter motor going it was a good enough car. Think rust is your biggest problem get right in there arches sills and wings rust alot

What colour is it as pics are blocked at work. Guessing either green or blue?
Had 2 mk3's (1.4cl & VR6) both of them were absolute saints never gave me trouble. The 1.4 went from 100k to 150k in a year and never missed a beat.
Dad has had his colour con for around 10 years now, seats are lovely make sure the elements heat up as it's common for them to be faulty due to age. Check for gear box noises as that was quite common, Dad's is whining hard in reverse but has been like that for years, he's waiting for it to go completely before changing.
Pokey being an 8v but won't rip your face off. VR6 would be noticeably quicker and they sound lovely, would imagine a decent one with leathers etc to cost more though.
Check for rust on the boot and the arches (can't see pics to see if there a pics of these areas) And give it a test drive and make sure there are no funny noises/dash lights/smoke from cold, usual things really.
Pics of my old VR in my garage, couple of dads in there too iirc.

Cheers Fro... Yeah it is blue, still undecided on it tbh but i like the car as whole so it wont put me off.
Rust hopefully isnt an issue as it looks and sounds very well looked after but obviously i will check it over properly myself. I love the interior in it, looks really comfy.
Just going to give my a clean up now then head off to meet up.
Will update later with how i get on

id have one again but the colour concept isnt the kind of rare to get a high price. 8vs are wicked on the motorway and normal driving about. the sills rot, the bottom of the rear windows rot, ecu and fuel pump relays can develop faults but theyre easy fixes
