Ive got a new job and it will mean quite a bit of motorway miles every week. I currently have a astra H 1.6 petrol but the fuel consumption isnt the best, also as I will be clocking up alot more miles I want to get rid of this and buy a small cheapish to run diesel.

Ive seen a few threads on here about clio dci's giving 60mpg and £30 road tax per year, something like this would be ideal. Also been looking at corca c 1.3 diesels, I know these are a fiat engine but does anyone know much aout them? Reliable? Efficient on diesel? When I worked for suzuki they used this engine in the swifts and we never got any trouble with them. Im sure I heard vauxhall recalled some of them for head gasket failure though, anyone got anymore info on this?

Or any suggestions of any other small diesel hatches, preferably a turbo diesel as it should still have a wee bit poke about it.

Budget will be around £2500-£3000, I will be trading in my astra against a new car and I imagine this is roughly what I will get for my astra.

Cheers people!

Corsa C 1.7 Dti. Slighty less mpg and £95 a year tax.

I've not had first hand experience of the 1.3 Cdti, but the faults I constantly see from this engine are EGR valves stuck open, starting problems and hesitant on the power.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201206448646951/sort/locasc/usedcars/engine-size-cars/1-4l_to_1-6l/price-to/3000/quantity-of-doors/3/fuel-type/diesel/model/clio/make/renault/postcode/eh216hj/radius/1500/page/1?logcode=p

something like that would be ideal, local as well. opinions on milage? i know other diesels millage doesnt matter as they seem to go on forever but is this the case with renault?

seems a pretty good price, £30 a year tax and 60mpg is the most appealing bit, imagine insurance will be pretty cheap as well, I'l go and do a quick quote now

Clio DCi 100. Will be all round perfect.
Top of the range, 100bhp, £30 tax.
They even have satnav built in on some and 3k will get you a nice one.
If you do want a bit more power, remap will take it to 135bhp.
That would be my choice

Edit:
I've got the 65 which is a cracking car, with your
Budget I'd get the 100. All round better choice.
I had the 65 because my budget was smaller.
With 3k you'll get a tidy spec DCi 100. Stronger/better engines

At that mileage, make sure the cambelt has been done as that's another cost to be
Considered. Garages charge £250 for it to be
Done.
Mine is on 94k and belts just been done by myself.
Was way overdue. If you look on eBay there's loads with slipped belts.

thanks for the info mate, I would be doing the belt myself anyway, if possible i would like not to spend the whole budget but will if I have to, really depends if the valuation of my astra is correct

just done a insurance quote on the one in the link i posted, £382 for the year so cant complain really, overall it would be cheap motoring for a while!

gez when you say the 100 is a better/stronger engine than the 65 in what way mate? sorry not clued up on these at all, would obviously be looking into the more reliable version if there is one, always hear horror stories of french reliability though

the whole engine is different tbh mate.

the 65 doesn't have an intercooler.

and the 80DCi had an intercooler and better map.

the 100 DCi has stronger internals, bigger injectors, bigger turbo, better gearbox (65-80 have a jc3) and the 100 had a jc5 (which is from a 172/182)
better map, bigger inlet ports and everything else really

just a better engine as a whole.

i done the belts myself. you need the timing belt locking tools to hold everything in place on these. can have them on ebay at £12 delivered.

but so far, mine has been awesome and is so cheap to run. my insurance isnt quite that cheap as yours, mines around £600 whcih for my age is awesome.

the only experience I have of french diesels is in the suzuki grand vitara diesels they used a renault engine f9q was the engine code and we used to change quite a few rear mains seals for leaking on them, was a bastard of a job to do

apart from that they seemed pretty bulletproof

perfect, just been having a quick look on google and it seems there wasnt that many 100 models made, and they are hard to come by. not had a proper look on autotrader yet so will have to see.

failing that it would be a 60 or 85 and get a dtuk box on it

you'd get a 80DCi easy enough.

if your going to map the car, then for the hastle just get the 80 at least. if you get a 65 your going to be fiddling buying an intercooler and fuel pump before you can map it.

thats a good point actully, tbh im not really that fussy about having one remapped, just feel the extra bit power would maybe feel beneficial on the motorway

I've been looking at Clio dCi's for a while now, you can get a 2003/2004/2005 one with 40/50k for £2.5k.
I would really expect a perfect example for the £3k your willing to spend and there doesn't seem to be much difference if it's a 65/80/100, roughtly seen them going for the same prices.

see what you mean, ideally I will need to go to a dealer though as will be trading my current car in against one so this might affect the prices

A 1.3 cdti does not 'go like fuck'. They are good engines, I like them and they feel quicker than the 1.2 petrol, that's as far as it goes though.

I had one in a C and GF has a D and had no issues with either.

59 bhp

clio dci:
14.5 secs
101 mph

hardly any difference
