Finally graduating my uni as of may/june and am applying for careers for when i do graduate, atm ive looked at a few jobs in london and applied there as well as a few out oxford & milton keynes way.

Communting into london isnt a problem for me as most of my family does anyway so wouldnt be anything new to me, jobs up oxford and milton keynes for me would be M1/M40 at peak times and i think it would be a complete arse as well as costing a fortune.

my question is, does anyone here do long distance commutes and how do they deal with it, im thinking abut 30 miles is a maximum distance and some ive applied for are about 60 miles away, company car wont be an option and its a graduate job so im not expecting money to be great

edit, above poll is in miles

Dunno how many miles I am away but it's an hour ish door to door.

Surely it's a no brainer to work in London if it's easier for you, then you would benefit from higher salaries?

Forgot to add, there is no driving in my commute. I have a 5 minute walk, 25 minute train journey, 10 minute tube journey then another 5 minute walk. I know that only adds up to 45 minutes but in reality there's usually an extra 10 minutes between the parts of my journey.

Most I've gone is a 34 mile round trip. Wouldn't go any further than that.

if you need to travel on roads which will have bad traffic i would recommend doing your CBT and buying 125 motorcycle then you could filter past all the traffic and get there in record timing

I work all over the country and often travel 70-80 miles each way, i dont mind becuase i am payed for the hours i work but it can be a right ball ache in peak times.
The worst thing is doing the 8 hours hard graft and then having a 2 and a half/3hour journey home thats the killer for me.

for the past 6 months ive had contracts in london so been doing 12-14 hour days, soon catches up with ya and you'd struggle to have a life out of work aha by the time im home cooked, washed etc its time for bed

My thought is you should be prepared to go where ever the work is.

My communte varies every day.

Sometimes its 10 miles an 15 minutes each way.
Sometimes its 170 miles 3+ hrs each way.
Generally mine is average 50-60miles and 1hr 1/2 each way.

The pay for the work i think has to reflect in whether it is worth doing the commute.

I travel 16 miles to work, then another 200-500 for work then home again.
Only takes ten minutes to get there as its all motorway, that's when there's no roadworks.

Wouldn't want to work any further than a 15 minute walk/ten minute drive away. Had a 45 min drive commute before and made me realise how shit and pointless it really is.

Working on building sites mine varies quite a lot. Currently 20 miles but being mostly motorway only takes 25 minutes on average. Now I'm self-employed I wouldn't want to go much further than that if I could help it, I don't get paid any extra for travelling and pay my own diesel.
I'm off to Bradford in the morning but that's a one off to help someone out, there are two of us to share diesel costs and tbh it's only 45 minutes anyway.
When I was an employee we used to work all over the country, anything over 1.5 hrs away and we would stay in digs.
