We had our collie put down because he got bad testicle cancer a few years ago and are thinking about getting another dog.

Anyone got a greyhound... really tempted as i think they are great dogs and getting a rescue one should be easy.

Just wondering what they are like as pets.

i did hear that about them.

Funny you would think a dog bred for racing would be quite energetic!

If we ever get a dog it will be a retired greyhound. A family friend has one that retired due to a leg break. It's the nicest dog ever and they don't need loads of looking after. It sleeps alot. They walk it every day but it seems pretty lazy. Only thing you have to watch is their chase instinct never goes. If they take it off the lead and it sees a cat or something it's off! It's still like lightening.

There really is no difference

I think they are great dogs though, really friendly and well natured.

You just have to be careful of children and other dogs, greyhounds aren't fragile but they don't deal well with rough play like you could do with a staffordshire bull terrier for example.

Greyhounds make wonderful pets, we have two bitches ourselves.

There is sometimes a misconception that you have to walk them about 100 times a day etc. because of the type of dog they are - this is not the case. They just sleep most of the time and aren't bothered if you walk them or not (although it's good to walk them at least once a day - how would you feel if you were just stuck indoors all day everyday lol).

Most of them are not good around small furries though - cats, squirrels, really small dogs like Yorkies, even spaniels. Ours seem to get on OK with similar sized/slightly smaller dogs like labradors for example. One of the main problems is that they will have spent most of their life just socialising with humans and other greyhounds, they don't know about other breeds until they are retired and adopted. Our two have been getting on better with other breeds of dogs since they've been in retirement (they are ex racers that we bought from the Retired Greyhound Trust at Hall Green, Birmingham) and now even if a small dogs comes up to them and starts barking as we walk, they won't go for it.

They are generally good around children and adults, the one in my avatar for example will just stay next to you and be happy to be stroked for hours as she loves the attention whereas the other one is just like "meh, whatever" and will go off and sleep somewhere. I've personally not heard of any cases where a greyhound has attacked a person.

We paid a £100 "donation" per dog from the RGT and they give you some free pet insurance for like a month or something like that, and a collar and lead for the dog too.

Health-wise, not really that much difference to other dogs TBH. Make sure their teeth are in good condition and clean them regularly + give them those Dentastix or whatever they're called. Dunno about what scunnylad's mate said but we've never been told about anything special to keep an eye out for with greyhounds. Booster injections and kennel cough vaccinations annually, worming tablets every 3 months - these can be bought online much cheaper than from the vets. (Dry) dog food has to have a protein level of about 21% or less, we've tried various brands from Wagg to James Wellbeloved, in the end our two get on well with this stuff called Harringtons Complete Turkey and Vegetables which you can buy from Asda/Sainsbury's or online - they also don't fart as much... We get a 5kg bag of dog food each week costing about £7ish and it lasts well over a week for the both of them. They get a cupful of it at lunch time and tea time, in the mornings they get some Shredded Wheat (spoiled dogs eh)! We also like to give them a dog biscuit each in the evening as a little treat, but apart from that just water and that maintains their weight at around 23-25kg, any more than that and they will be tubby!

When you get a greyhound from your local RGT it will have been neutered, but you should also get the dog microchipped (about a tenner from your local vet's) should they attempt a disappearing act... The one in my avatar buggered off from our previous house twice, first time just to someone's house round the corner, and the second time to the local corner shop. I'm sure a fatty like me running after a dog that can run up to 45mph was quite humourous for people watching at both times!

Before ending my Paul_j style essay here the only thing I would say is that the male greyhounds are somewhat larger and much more boisterous than the bitches, so if you want a low maintenance greyhound get a bitch.

If you would like to know anything else give me a shout if I've not bored you silly by now
