Lots of manufacturers use them with different names thrown into the mix
depends on what you are after as to wether they are better - they change gear faster than you would with a manual

I have it on my leon, personally love it.
few issues i have with them in general though...
- in drive mode - it will stop in 2nd until i literally stop even when going up hill, however in manual mode it will drop me down to 1st way too early.
- manual mode isnt fully manual (good and bad thing really).
- flappy paddles make you feel like a race car driver [/6year old]
- they are quicker than manuals but not as economic apparently.
- gives you the option of manual/auto so best of both worlds.
- 3 point turns are quicker in a manual as you have to wait a second or 2 for reverse to engage.
- reversing can be a bit jerky (usually a sign of the mechtronics going which isnt cheap so im led to believe).

I've got it in my VRs. Personally I love it, it's hell of a lot smoother you don't even noticed it's changing gear. Being a lazy tard that I am I always leave it in Auto, but have got the option for Semi-Manual, + and - .
Edit: @Mattel, must just be yours then because mines fine i.e. Not jerky in reverse.
Edit: @Gareth, if you were closer I would of let you driven mine.

mines doesnt jerk tbh or if it does its very very rarely was more just a warning that if it does it can be a sign the mech is going. Also mine hates cold weather when it was really cold over winter on a few occasions the gearbox would hold me in gear when coming upto a junction and push me forward despite break being pressed in

My wife has a Fabia with a DSG box, and my Cougar has an auto box. I like the idea of being able to change gears or go into auto mode on the Fabia, but it does change down too early sometimes - funny thing is if I have the exact same style of driving/speeds on the same bit of road but in auto mode it keeps it in gear longer?
I prefer the auto box in the Cougar though TBH, but then it does help that it's mated to a 2.5 V6 engine as opposed to a 1.6 16v

Good if you want a lazy car, bad if you want to actually drive the car

When my other half first got her Fabia I always drove it in manual mode i.e. shifting up/down etc. but I soon got bored of that and just drive it in auto mode
So, when can I have a go in your vRS?

I really don't like it. I test drove one when I bought my golf and everyone said the Dsg was the one to have. Like stan says its just a glorified auto IMO. Better off with a manual.

DSG is a glorified manual, not a glorified auto.

A common mistake John.
It's a manual with an automated clutch. No torque converters anywhere on the car. Not smooth like an auto.
If its anything like SMG which I'm pretty certain it is (but better) then a quick drive will not endear you to it. Took me a month till I fully understood my gearbox. Exceeds a regular manual IMO I'd always pick an Smg/DSG now

It just looks like it takes the fun out of driving. It is just a fancy auto box tho. You don't use a clutch which is the same as an auto but you get to play with plastic paddles now and then.

It's not a fancy auto box, it's a fancy manual box.
