One of the things on my to-do list is to try and find the source of an oil leak on my car.

I want to buy some car ramps to help me do this, my question is do I need to get one that has a width greater than the width of my tyres (215mm)?

I've seen these for sale on eBay for £22.40 brand new but the width of them is only 180mm.

Most modern cars can't get up those ramps. Just jack it up and put on stands.

Planks of 2" timber, cut the first to 6', cut the second to 5' and nail/ glue on top with the edges in line on one side, third bit to 4' and nail/ glue on top, etc. as long as you've got somewhere to store them you're onto a winner

Thanks mate, but I want to buy some as I'm sure there will be many occasions where I'll need to get under the belly of my car in the future

Thats fairly similar to what i've got and they're a lot better than the ones posted as I don't like trusting the construction of them as if any sideways force is put on them they'll just fold and collapse. I managed to get mine for free but i'm sure you can get something similar for a lot less! Mine have had fully loaded ambulances on so if they can take the weight and width of twin tyres on the back i'm sure they'll take any car

i have used them with tyres wider than the ramps and its ok, but them ramp aren't very good, ending up giving mine away as i went to drive the corrado up them and just pushed them across the garage floor.

You can add a plank of wood to the front of them to lessen the angle, some ramps even come with a metal extension to do that.

I have ramps that wind up, they're only about 3-4 inches high when flat, but they wind up really high.

They look like these, only they're not hydraulic.

My dad has a set, and some home made extensions for when I had my corsa, I would never drive on them though through fear of going over the other side.

My tip would be that if you are always going to have someone around to watch you drive on then a smaller width would be fine, however if you will be doing this soley alone then get wider ones, if you misjudge anything then it's going to be extremely expensive.
